Ruth Mae Carr

Ruth Mae Cannon Carr, was born April 6,1932, to the late Lena Idella Smith and Randolph Tull, of Salisbury, Maryland. She departed this life at the age of 86, and entered her enteral rest, on May 24, 2018, at home, in Dover, Delaware. Ruth’s early childhood was spent in Salisbury, Maryland, with her mother and stepfather, Coulbourne Cannon. She was educated in Wicomico County Schools and graduated from Salisbury High School in 1948. After their courtship, Ruth married Berley L. Carr, on December 8, 1956, and the family of two, over the years, became a family of seven. During her husband’s twenty-nine-year military career, the family traveled between the United States and Europe, with Ruth leading the way. As the family traveled, Ruth worked at various locations as a school administrator or library special assistant. She was devoted to whatever she did, and it was done at her best. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and caregiver who always put her family first. Ruth loved the Lord and served him and the church with her whole heart. Her service started as a member of St. James A.M.E. Church in Salisbury, Maryland. This love for God was shared with her children and as they traveled, they attended the chapels on the different military bases. After her husband retired from the military and moved to Delaware, Ruth attended Mt. Plymouth A.M.E. Zion Church in Felton, Delaware. Supporting her husband, she became a member of Morning Star Intuitional Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) under the pastoral leadership of ElderThomas L. Holsey. Ruth’s service at Morning Star included the Mothers Board and president of the Christian Education Department. At the time of her death, she was a member of Bibleway Institutional C.O.G.I.C., Bishop Thomas L. Holsey, pastor. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Berley L. Carr; her only brother, Clayton Cannon; and her youngest son, Michael K. Carr. Ruth leaves to cherish fond memories, a grateful and thankful family, including children, Derrick L. Carr, Sr. (wife Angie), Terance L. Carr (wife Juanita), Cheryl L. Byrd (husband Steven, Sr.), and Velda Denise Knox; daughter-in-law, Donnetta Carr (Michaels widow); twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; eighteen great-great grandchildren; nephew, Robert Gale, Sr; two sisters- in-law, Gertrude Brown and Doretha Carr; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
