Ruben Solomon "Butch" Selby

Ruben Solomon Selby, 70, departed this life on February 26, 2021, peacefully, in his residence, in Newark, Delaware. He was born in Mappsville, Virginia, on March 2, 1950, to the late Alvin Adair and Bernice Dickerson Selby. “Butch”, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, received his education in the Accomack County Public Schools, graduating from Mary N. Smith High School. He then went on to attend Delaware State University. Butch retired from General Motors after 39 plus years of service. He spent his earlier years active in baseball leagues, bowling and golfing. He was a DJ and was also an avid collector of stamps and car magazines. He enjoyed a good movie, as well as, frequenting auctions, and found great pleasure in fishing. He was referred to as “The Fish Finder” by his friends. Butch never missed a chance to play the lottery or go to Delaware Park to place a bet. Throughout his life, one interest always remained steadfast, his love of cars. It didn’t matter if he was fixing, buying, or attending car shows, he had an enormous interest in all types of automobiles. Nothing was more satisfying to Butch than a plate of food, in front of a TV, surrounded by his family. You would find him with his arms folded, belly full and full of laughter. Ruben was very blessed to have a great nephew, Savanta Selby and a wonderful daughter, Consuela, both who loved and cared for him unconditionally and attended to his comfort and care. On behalf of Ruben Selby, we would like to acknowledge his two best friends, Sonny, whom he worked with at General Motors and his friend Mickey, who was his neighbor and more like a brother to Ruben for over 40 years. Ruben’s neighbor, Smitty, stated “He was a great neighbor, great man, and great friend! Butch gave love and was loved. Ruben Solomon Selby is now in God’s care. Ruben was preceded in death by a brother, Jimmy Selby; a niece, Elizabeth Ann Selby and a nephew, Robert “Bobby “Savage. Ruben is survived by his children, Antione Smith (Melissa), Consuela Jacobs and Carmen Jacobs; grandchildren, Maya Simone Smith and Jordan James-Jacobs; siblings, Galina A. Savage, Alvin T. Selby (Melba) and Linda D. Savage; and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as Diana Selby, whom he considered his “forever wife”. Their love and respect for each other endured until the end.
