Rose Lively McGreer

Our Heavenly Father called his child, Annie Rose McGreer, home. She earned her wings and went from labor to reward on October 26, 2017. Rose, as she was fondly called, was born on April 20, 1911, in Pomona, Maryland, and moved to Chestertown in her early childhood years. She is the youngest child of Horace and Mary Lively’s four children; Sarah, Earl, Lydia and Rose. Rose has always been the matriarch and rock of the family. She was married to her husband, Sam McGreer, for 38 years until his death in 1972. She raised her daughter, Hilda Graves and two grandchildren, Monica and Karen Graves, who affectionately called her Mum-Mum. Rose enjoyed taking care of her family and friends. She made her home a “home” for many of her nieces and nephews and welcomed all to her humble abode by calling out “YOU HEW” as a sign to come on in and have a seat! She enjoyed watching the Orioles baseball games and was a special guest of the Orioles Bird for her 99th birthday at Camden Yards. Rose worked in her earlier years as a domestic cook and housekeeper. Cooking was still one of her passions until her illness. During her later years, she was also employed at the Vita Food Factory and Friel’s Food Processors. Rose gave her life to Christ, and became a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, at an early age. She has been a good and faithful servant and has served on many organizations in the church including the Stewards Board and Usher Board and served as a mentor for the Youth Choir and Youth Basketball leagues. She also served as a faithful member of the kitchen ministry teaching others how to prepare food and sell dinner plates. She has had a profound influence on her family, church members and community and has instilled her moral principles on all that would listen. In her 106 years of life she created a legacy of being a strong willed, independent and warm spirited individual. Rose witnessed the passing of her parents, Horace and Mary; brother, Earl; sisters, Sarah and Lydia; husband, Sam; daughter, Hilda; and grand-daughter Karen. Her legacy lives on through her granddaughter, Monica Graves-Bentley (Harrison); nieces, Mrs. Rebecca Turner, Mrs. Rosetta Johnson, Mrs. Bessie Sims, and Mrs. Shirley Warren; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
