Robert Lee Handy

ROBERT LEE HANDY, fondly known as “Poke”, was born in Salisbury, Maryland on November 30, 1954. Following a brief illness, he peacefully transitioned from this life on earth to his eternal reward in the early morning hours of Friday, May 19, 2017. The son of Louise Catherine Giddens of Pocomoke, Maryland and William Calvin Collier, Sr. of Salisbury, Maryland and the late Samuel Floyd Giddens who reared him, Robert was raised in a loving, God-fearing atmosphere filled with discipline and respect. Educated in the public schools of Somerset County, Maryland, at an early age Robert acknowledged his responsibility for his family. He committed his love to them and left school early to make sure they were always provided for to the best of his ability. For nearly forty (40) years, Robert worked tirelessly in the poultry industry between Tyson’s and Perdue Farms. He also farmed for Ralph Lankford from a very early age. Robert, along with his brother Alphonzo, ensured that every need was met in the household and they did it unselfishly and without any hesitation. Throughout his entire life, Robert loved and cared for his mother unconditionally. To know Robert was to love him and if you were his friend, he was a friend for life. Robert loved every type of animal and always had stray animals around that he lovingly cared and provided for because of his nurturing spirit. Even though Robert could drive, his favorite mode of transportation was his bicycle. His last few bikes were orange and you could see him any time of day or night, slowly pedaling around and throwing his hand up to anyone he knew. In addition to his mother, Louise Giddens and his father, William (Elsie) Collier, Sr., special memories of Robert’s life will always be remembered by: his children, Antonio Handy of Princess Anne, Maryland, Michael Handy of Salisbury, Maryland, Precious Handy of Ocean Pines, Maryland and Darius Cullen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his siblings, Alphonzo (Vanessa) Giddens, Sr. of Mardela Springs, Maryland, Rosemary (Walter “Bud”) Armstrong of New Church, Virginia, Jeannette Whittington of Crisfield, Maryland, Sheila (Clifton) Turner of Forestville, Maryland, Gladys Williams of Salisbury, Maryland, Cheryll (Reverend Carroll) Mills of Pocomoke, Maryland, Nelva (Barry) White of Pocomoke, Maryland, Natalie Collier of Fort Washington, Maryland, William Calvin Collier, Jr. of Pocomoke, Maryland, Bryan (Kristina) Collier of Marlboro, New York and Louron Johnson of Bridgeville, Delaware; fourteen (14) grandchildren; two aunts, Emma Shreeves of Westover, Maryland and Norma Faye (Charles) Williams of Willards, Maryland; two uncles, Samuel (Phyllis) Collier and John Handy, both of Westover, Maryland; two special cousins, Paul and Alfred Handy; special friends, Sidney “Bud” Taylor, Kelly Trego and David Marshall and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his dad Samuel Floyd Giddens, Robert was also preceded in death by two children, Yolanda and Troy Handy.
