Richard Hudson

On the morning of Monday March 18, 2019, our dear father, Richard O’Carnell Hudson (“Pop Pop”), departed this life peacefully at his home and earned his wings. He was born in Salisbury, MD on September 8, 1935, the son of the late Oscar Hudson and Amy Parsons-Hudson. Richard was a Korean War Veteran where he served as a military police officer for the United States Army. Being the uniformed, strikingly handsome young man that he was, while stationed in Aberdeen, MD, he met and married the love of his life, Beulah Newson. Richard and Beulah settled down in Salisbury, MD, where they raised their children and made a home that was welcomed to all. Richard retired from the S & H Green Stamp Store and the Wicomico County Library. He also worked at The Deaf and Independent Living Association as a part-time driver. Richard and Beulah also had an office cleaning business, where he held cleaning contracts with The Daily Times, Dr. Toby Kleger, Dr. Graham, Bay States and Dennis Sales for over forty (40) years. He took pride in going back to school to earn his degree and during the years that his children were in school, he was very active in supporting the PTA. Richard was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #0145. Along with his love of people, Richard loved to swim, fish, roller skate, travel, dance, and most of all, spend time with his family. His hobbies evolved with him, becoming a certified life guard, where he saved lives and taught his children and other children to swim, fishing in his boat named “The Eva Lee” in waters up and down the eastern shore, traveling cross-country by car as far as the Grand Canyon and oversees to Germany. Often told he had the voice of a radio announcer, his voice was bold, stern, distinct and one of authority. Anyone who knew him or ever talked to him would never forget that voice. Preceding him in death (besides his parents) were his brothers, Levin and Oscar and his sisters, Martha and Pauline. Richard leaves behind to cherish his precious memories: his wife of sixty-three (63) years, Beulah Mae Newson-Hudson of Salisbury, MD; his sister, Bernice Wimberley of New York, NY; six daughters, Lorna Coppola (John) of Brooklyn, NY, Romona Fontaine (George) of Fruitland, MD, Amy Holden of Memphis, TN, Renee Shuler of Salisbury, MD, Martha Bennett (Aaron) of Savannah, GA, and Terry Griffith (Cecil) of Upper Marlboro, MD, four sons, Nicholas Newson (Carolyn) of Memphis, TN, Perry Johnson (Donna) of Painesville, OH, Gregory Johnson (Vicky) of Memphis, TN, and Clifford Cottman (Sheila) of Salisbury, MD; his mother-in-law, Eva Lee Davis of Memphis, TN; his sister-in-law, Imogene Miller of Memphis, TN; a nephew, Glenn Crews (Lossie) of Baltimore, MD; a niece, Pauline Hopkins of New York, NY; a devoted friend, Hanson Handy (Cynthia, deceased) and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, cousins, friends, family and neighbors.
