Richard S. Cannon

Richard Sylvester Cannon, known as “Sweetback” was born on April 20, 1952 to the late Herman Conway and the late Sarah Elizabeth Cannon. He departed this life on Thursday March 3, 2016 at his home. Richard was given his nickname “Sweetback” by the Smith boys. Richard obtained his education at Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School and Woodbridge High School in Bridgeville, DE. He worked for Penn Fibre in Greenwood, DE, Kenny Brothers, Ralph and Paul Adams and Perdue Hatchery in Bridgeville, DE and H&H Poultry in Selbyville, DE. Richard was known to be a very hard worker in every job that he held. In his spare time, Richard loved to barbecue and was known for his secret sauce that he provided to the neighborhood, friends and family. Richard was known for his wise jokes, and loved fishing and crabbing, but mostly spending time with his family. He was also a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Before his health failed him, he could be seen riding his bike through Bridgeville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Cannon and Larry Cannon. Richard is survived by seven children, Stacie Collins-Young (James) of Viola, DE; Richard Walker, Sylvester Walker, Joyce Walker of Bridgeville, DE. Israel Walker (LaToya) of Hebron, MD. Chris Clark of Milford, DE and Rich Clark of Chattanooga, TN. He is survived by seven sisters, Lorraine (Leon) Smith of Bridgeville, DE; Delphine Cannon (James) of Felton, DE; Deliah Johnson (Cornell) of Seaford, DE; Tenesa Conway of Washington, DC; Alena Conway of Greenwood, DE; Eugenia Armwood (Jay) of Greenwood, DE and Karen Brooker of Alabama and six brothers, Merle Cannon and Wayne Cannon of Bridgeville, DE; Herman Prattis (Beverly) and Darcy Nichols of Hurlock, MD; James Maddox of Dover, DE; Ivory Conway of Bridgeville, DE. Five stepchildren, Mardella Walker of Preston, MD. Karlene Walker of Cambridge, MD; Patsy Bailey, Albert Bailey Sr. and Teresa Neal, all of Bridgeville, DE and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
