Phyllis McBride

Our beloved Phyllis Mae Hayward McBride departed this earthly life on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 in the comfort of her home. Phyllis was born in Salisbury, Maryland on November 26, 1946 to the late Littleton and Mattie (Nixon) Hayward of Princess Anne, Maryland. Phyllis was educated in the public schools of Somerset County, Maryland and graduated from the former Somerset Junior/Senior High School in Princess Anne, Maryland. After graduating, Phyllis was employed for a number of years with the former Campbell Soup Company. In 1988 she started her own business, The Busy Bees Day Care, where she has taken care of many children from our community until now. Phyllis was a long time member of the PF Pals (Professional Family Provider Association of the Lower Shore). She was a past member of her family church, Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Princess Anne, MD, where she sang in the choir. Later, in 1975, Phyllis became one of the founding members of United Faith Church of Deliverance, under the leadership of Bishop George A. Copeland. She was always very active and supportive of her ministry. She attended the United Faith Deliverance Bible College. Phyllis served as President of the Missionary Board; she was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Teacher, a member of the Crusade Team and also a member of the Choir. Phyllis founded a group called “Young Girls with a Purpose”, teaching life skills and how to grow to be Godly young ladies. Phyllis was a Godly woman; a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and child care provider where the kids called her Nae-Nae. Phyllis loved to keep house plants alive and vibrant in her home; we could say she had a “green thumb.” She enjoyed baking her famous Sweet Potato Pies and her delicious “Flop Cakes.” She enjoyed playing Uno and checkers with family and friends, and working on Sudoku puzzles. She also loved to read her Bible, every day and night. She loved traveling, especially to Florida, and going places with family, friends and her church. Phyllis committed much of her time to prayer and intercession for others. Phyllis was united in Holy Matrimony to Vernon T. McBride on December 25, 1965. From this union five children were born. A son, Vernon T. McBride, Jr., preceded her in death, along with her parents (Littleton and Mattie Hayward) and her beloved sister, Mattie Johnson. Phyllis leaves to cherish special memories with: her husband, Vernon T. McBride, Sr. and four children—three daughters, Veronica McBride, Vera McBride Jenkins, and Valerie McBride all of Salisbury, MD and one son, Victor McBride, Sr. of Salisbury, MD; two sisters, Frances (Benjamin) McBride of Salisbury, MD and Mary (Archie) Jones of Fayetteville, NC; two brothers, James (Mary) Hayward of Eden, MD and Leon (Geraldine) Hayward of Fruitland, MD; a sister-in-law, Loretta Pettit and Emily Ward, sister/best friend; eight Grandchildren, Courtney (Larry) Smith, Tiffany (Mark) Corbin, Jr., Shaneta Dix, DeOntre’ Blake, Victor McBride, Jr., Stephen Castaneda, Keyonia Dale and Caleb McBride; two great-Grandchildren, Takara Corbin and Richard Corbin; six God-Children Onika, Tavessa, Jeffery, Tyler, Danielle and Ze-asia; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, extended family members and friends.
