Percy Johnson Sr.

Percy Lee Johnson, Sr., was called from this life on earth on Friday, December 11, 2020. He was under the care of Seasons Hospice for over two years, during which the staff became like a family to him. Percy was one of seven siblings born in Suffolk, Virginia, on Sunday, October 18, 1925, to the late Rochelle Johnson and the late Josephine Green Johnson. He later migrated to Delaware, where he attended William C. Jason Comprehensive High School. Percy worked at Perdue Farms in Georgetown, Delaware, for a many of years. He later became a farm worker in Laurel for many farms. Doing gardening was his passion. He could grow anything. Percy was known for his kind heart, wisdom, humor, and not to say the least, his fond stories of old. He would help out anyone and would not want anything in return. He didn’t want anyone to help him either, he was so independent. He also loved to sing. He was in a group at one time called “The Harmonizing 5”. He still was singing up to his last day. Percy’s health started declining in 2015, at which he became a little to weak to stand, let alone ride that bike he used to ride every day up until he was 92 years old. Even in that, Percy gained two favorite phrases he used every day, several times a day, “To God Be The Glory” and “In His Holy Name, I Thank Him”. He didn’t let a day go by without talking about “That Rock”, someone he can lean on. Percy loved the Lord. Percy has a cousin, whom he thought and spoke very highly of all the time, Janet Green of Middletown, Delaware. Percy was well known in the community of Laurel, DE 19956. He resided in Laurel Commons as one of the first residents to live there and that community loved Mr. Percy dearly. Percy loved all of his children very dearly. He was preceded in death by two sons Percy Lee Johnson Jr. of Slaughter Neck, DE and William Calvin Lee Johnson of Laurel, DE. Percy leaves to mourn, four children Donald Horsey of Bridgeville, DE; Barbara Jackson of Dover, DE, Shirl Brunson of Wilmington, DE and Mary Johnson Lewis of Laurel, DE; a brother, James Thomas Johnson of Catonsville, MD; and a sister, Vivian Ellis Avant of Magnolia, DE. He also leaves 21 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren and a host of great- great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins, who all loved him a lot. Percy will be missed, but surely never forgotten.
