Pecola Isabella Stevens

PECOLA’S LIFE STORY Pecola Isabella Stevens, the daughter of the late Lola Polk, was born on March 3, 1927 in Princess Anne, Maryland. She departed this world on May 8, 2024, at home, under hospice care. Pecola was married to the late Robert McGill Stevens. She was educated in the Somerset County school system, and retired from the former Campbell Soup Company, in Salisbury, Maryland. Pecola was known for her great cooking. People would come from everywhere just to enjoy her chicken and dumplings, greens, and her mouthwatering sweet potato pies. Her beef vegetable soup was off the chart. Her meals were only seasoned with salt, pepper, and “LOVE.” Pecola always dressed like a model. She was a very, very Clean and Particular person and everything had its’ place. She spoke her mind, and did not cater to nonsense. Pecola loved people, flowers, and traveling. She traveled from as far as the Carolinas to California. Her only means of travel was by bus because Pecola would always say that the ocean was too much water for her to drink, and that if the Lord wanted her to fly, He would have given her wings. Whenever anyone came to visit mother and was about to leave, she would say, “I love you and you know it.” Pecola was an active member of Unity Christian Fellowship Church in Salisbury, Maryland, where her pastor is Elder Dr. Clarence Polk and also her cousin. She was the beloved Mother of the Church and had a personal relationship with the Lord. No matter what her struggle, she always managed to give God the praise of which He was worthy. Pecola was also the oldest living relative on the side of the Polk family. Those left to cherish loving memories are: six children, Howard (Margo) Stevens of Salisbury, MD, Robert Stevens, Glendola Stevens and Mary Stevens, all of Fruitland, MD and Arthur Stevens and Sarah Stevens, both of Salisbury, MD; grandchildren, Belinda (Allen) Price, Ellen (Michael) Cutler, Alicia Hughes, Alexander (Valerie) Stevens, Lamont Duggins, Laneca Duggins and step-grandchildren, Cardiea (Jerome) Moore, Pandora (John) Washington and Margo (Marion) Brown. Pecola has twenty six great-grand, and a host of great-great grandchildren, great nephews, great nieces, cousins and friends. Seven special close friends are Jennie Percy (cousin), Pam Raynor (goddaughter), Dana Duncan (cousin), Anna Maria Garvin, Darlene Dorman, Ida Tilghman and Tanesha Pearsall. Those who preceded her in death were: her husband, Robert McGill Stevens; her mother, Lola Polk; her daughter, Brenda Joyce Polk; her sister, Catherine Rider; grandchildren, Chester Jones and Vanessa Jones and step-great grandson, Dondre’ Wilson.
