Paul E. Gary

Paul E. Gary, Sr. ‘Bolden’ of Smyrna, Delaware departed this life on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Bay Health-Kent General Hospital in Dover. Paul was born on May 11, 1929 in Jackson, North Carolina to Sidney Gary and Bettie McNair. He received his education in North Hampton County, North Carolina, after which he traveled to New York where he joined the United States Army National Guard. After a few years of service, Paul was honorably discharged. He later found employment with J.S. Blank & Company, a menswear manufacturer. After 44 years of dedicated work, Paul retired, looking forward to spending time with his family. Paul was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Alice Artis. From this union three children were born. He was a loving husband, caring father and proud grandfather and provider. Paul loved and cared for his family dearly. Paul was a hardworking, family man that enjoyed traveling, and was passionate about gardening. He maintained a community garden where he grew green peppers, collard greens, squash and an abundance of tomatoes. He also had an interest in vintage cars, restoring a 1966 Mustang and 1969 Camaro. Paul accepted Christ at an early age at Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church in North Carolina. With his wife in 1975, he became an active member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Hackensack, NJ, where he served as an usher. After relocating to Delaware, Paul and his wife, Alice joined the Mt. Zion AME Church of Dover under the leadership of the Rev. Ellis B. Louden. He remained a faithful member until his passing. Paul is preceded in death by his father, mother, eight brothers, and three sisters. Paul is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Alice J. Gary and four children, Michael Randolph (Laura) of Mableton, GA; Paul E. Gary, Jr. of Teaneck, NJ; Elvira J. Gary of Teaneck, NJ; and Patricia J. Gary of Smyrna, DE; a brother, Cesar ‘Big Duke’ Gary of Jackson, NC; three sisters, Theresa Jones (Johnnie) of Murfreesboro, NC; Evangelist Betty Major of Henderson, NC and Rev. Bertha Morris (Ronnie) of White Plains, NY. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Jessica Randolph, Andrew Randolph, Christina Ramos-Gary, Jasmine Gary, Nicole Gary and Alexa Gary; step-grandchildren, John Mooney, Davina Mooney; and a host of relatives and friends.
