Nelson Edward Harmon Sr.

He gave no one a last farewell, nor ever said good-bye. He was gone before we knew it and only God knows why. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God took you home. Nelson Edward Harmon, Sr., son of the late Helen Blake Harmon and Riley Harmon, was born on May 15, 1934. “Bus,” as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, peacefully departed this earthly life on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, to enter into his eternal rest. He was a man with a sweet, quiet spirit who always greeted you with a smile. To know him was to love him. He was born and raised in Girdletree, Maryland and received his education in the public schools of Worcester County. In his early years, he attended Coolspring United Methodist Church. When his health allowed him to attend on special occasions, you could find him sitting quietly in the back. “Bus” had a desire to serve his country which led him to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, where he served for thirty (30) years. There he earned the title of Amtrak Crewman, bull dozer operator, trans opt operations chief and driver supervisor. He was also awarded a good conduct medal, a riffle sharpshooter badge and a pistol sharp shooter badge. When he felt he had done his duty as a service man, “Bus retired, having earned an honorable discharge. In addition to and more important than all the titles, medals and badges, “Bus" came to know and accept Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Although he was a man of few words, he always enjoyed being around family and having a good time. He leaves fond memories to be cherished by: his wife of fifty-two (52) years, Annie Harmon; four daughters, Joycelyn Hughes of Salisbury, Maryland, Crystal Patton and Lavern Mills, both of Wilmington, Delaware and Sandy Thomas (Eugene) of Georgia; two sons, Michael De’Jesus, born in the Philippines and Nelson Harmon, Jr. of California; three stepchildren, Mary Williams, Anthony Williams and Lonnie Harmon, all of California; eight (8) grandchildren; ten (10) step grandchildren; eleven (11) great grand and four (4) step great grandchildren; five sisters, Geraldine Jenkins, Mary Bratten and Mildred Dale, all of Snow Hill, Maryland; Laura Byrd of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Marie Hill (Roger) of Salisbury, Maryland; four sisters–in-law, Mary Frances Harmon of Snow Hill, Maryland, Elizabeth Robinson, Elva Dixon and Mary Williams and a brother-in-law, Theodore Williams, all of Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, “Bus” was preceded in death by four brothers, Rodger Harmon, Ernest Harmon, Leon Harmon and Ramon Harmon.
