Minnie P. Washington

Minnie P. Washington of Burgaw, North Carolina departed this life on July 14, 2015. Minnie was born on August 7, 1948, the oldest daughter of the late Valeva Davis and James P Clayton. She attended CF Pope High School in North Carolina, Essex County Business School and retired from Lyons VA Hospital in Newark, NJ. She married James O. Washington and they had four children: James Bannerman, Sarah Washington, Daryl Washington and Franklin Washington. Special: Caroline Swinney. She also was the grandmother of 11 loving grandchildren: James Beatty (Kayson), Darnell Roberts, Chad Bryant, Sharif Barber, Omar Barber, James Barber, Shahira Washington, Daryl Washington, Xavier Washington, Anja Washington, Khalil Washington, Jaelynn Washington and Mia Washington. Minnie, affectionately known as Pearl, was loving and proud of her children and could often be heard boasting of their accomplishments with pride and deep affection. Those who knew Pearl knew of her strong will, indomitable and intense spirit, generosity and how she lived in Christ. She had treasured friends and lived with them for a time in Newark, NJ. She was an active member of Greater Bethel Baptist Church and Queen Sheeba Masonic Temple in Newark NJ. Pearl enjoyed gardening, fishing, crocheting and spending quiet moment’s barbecuing and trash talking with family and friends. Pearl was a vision of beauty and of strong character. Those who know her best knew that she will be missed by everyone. Pearl was honest; at times too honest but, never to bring harm. Many of the neighborhood children called her mom. Her home was always open to all who needed a place to stay. She was “Big Momma” of the neighborhood. Every Sunday, she would cook a southern meal for family and friends to enjoy after church. Pearl was a proud woman who did not allow anyone to dictate her life. She was loved by many and impacted so many lives. Leaving behind to cherish her memories are her sisters: Larcena Bannerman, Linda Bannerman, Sally Ann Clayton, Brenda Clayton; her brothers: James Clayton, George Bannerman, Michael Clayton; and a host of loving great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
