Obituary I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 (NKJV) Mildred Christine Doane, born on January 27, 1948, peacefully transitioned into her eternal life on Sunday, September 1, 2019 with her loved ones surrounding her hospital bedside. Since childhood, her family and friends affectionately called her Christine or Cris. Born in North Carolina to the late Lillie Mae Williams and Milburn Stephens, Cris was one of six children. Beyond her earliest years, she grew up in Salisbury, Maryland where she liked spending time with her neighborhood friends and making paper dolls with complete outfits. Cris was a proud graduate of Salisbury High School, Class of 1966, and attended Maryland State College for two (2) years. On March 2, 1968, she was united in holy matrimony to Darnell Vincent Doane. They made their home in Somerset County, Maryland. This union of fifty-one (51) years was filled with unconditional love, laughter and sacrifice. They were the proud parents of two children, Marc Darnell and Terrell [Terri] Lynn. Cris was a faithful member of New Life Church in Princess Anne, Maryland. She adored the Lord and made it known everywhere she traveled. At New Life, Cris looked forward to Bible studies and ministering through music. She was assigned the responsibility of assisting with Sunday morning song selections and service preparations, which she absolutely cherished. Cris was employed at Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) for forty-six (46) years before her retirement several years ago. She began her career as a cashier in the hospital cafeteria and was promoted to a registrar role in the Emergency and Outpatient Registration Departments, which she later supervised for many years. Cris also supervised Centralized Scheduling during her tenure at PRMC. Her dedication to her job and commitment to setting the highest standards was admirable. Rain, sun, sleet or snow, Cris would find a way or make a way out of Oakville to get to her job…on time! She genuinely cared for every person who worked on her teams. Although she endured many health hurdles, her life is a testimony to the awesome signs and wonders of the Lord. Cris was seventy-one (71) years young and, through God’s perfect plan, recovered from multiple back, neck and brain surgeries among others during her earthly life. She stood on God’s promises and mostly everyone knows that her STRENGTH was amazing as she always bounced back swiftly. Her life is a lesson of prayer, patience, and perseverance – a testimony of the power of the Holy Spirit. Taking care of people, especially the elderly, was a passion for Cris. It was second nature for her to know exactly what to do in every situation. She believed in helping people maintain their dignity in spite of challenges and never hesitated to lend unwavering support to countless family members and friends. After her retirement, Cris followed her dream of becoming a patient advocate. Endorsed by staff, she established a family council at the Aurora Senior Living of Manokin in Princess Anne, MD, known as Coordinated Advocacy for the Residents’ Experience and Support (CARES). She led efforts to hold regular meetings, improve facility conditions and gather input for resident activities. Cris was an exceptional seamstress as well. She enjoyed sewing for hours on the weekends and making frequent trips to fabric stores. She could make all types of clothing for adults, children and Barbie dolls, including outerwear and even underwear! Her skills for making clothing (without a pattern) were unmatched and her family has about seven (7) sewing machines to prove it. Most recently, Cris joined a local sewing club where she designed fancy pants and dresses made from pillowcases to send to children in Africa. Her creations were always complete with buttons, bows and perfect pockets. She also enjoyed sending greeting cards for any occasion, watching television and baking breads or lemon pound cakes. Cris leaves to celebrate her life: her husband, Darnell Doane of Princess Anne, Maryland; two children, Marc Doane of Salisbury, Maryland and Terri Doane Savage of Jessup, Maryland; two sisters, Rose Huntley (Cecil) and Lisa Pusey (Dale) of Salisbury, Maryland; five grandchildren, Tiffanie Doane, Jalon Doane and Serenity Doane, all of Salisbury, Maryland, Colin Savage of Jessup, Maryland and An’drea Harmon of Princess Anne, Maryland; three great-grandchildren, two goddaughters, several devoted “sister friends” and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, Cris was preceded in death by her two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Lillie Jane Price, and her brother, Edward Earl Stephens. Remembered for her kind spirit and witty tongue, she will be sorely missed by everyone. She was an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law, godmother and friend – a true blessing to many.
