Mattie Gibson

I saw at a distant, the beacon light, and the ship come early that day or night, Jesus the captain whispered, this sail is for the resting shore, where sorrow and sickness will be no more, aboard it went with anchored joy, saying I wouldn't take nothing for the voyage. I will miss your present and happy days we've known, but I will always cherish your memories, and you won't be alone. I shared, cared and had much happiness and joy, and these are the memories death cannot destroy. While employed at the hospital, she felt as though she needed a different profession, she than began her training at the Delaware State Police Academy, Dover, DE. After graduation, she became an officer with the Delaware State Department of Corrections Womens Division. She was also employed at the Edward R. Bell Funeral Home, Jewell worked those positions dutifully, because she was helping others help themselves. She was saved and sanctified under the leadership of Elder Ross B. Rainey, and served there until she moved back to Detroit, MI to be near her beloved mother, Emma Davis, now deceased. She united with Holly Tabernacle C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Supt. W.C. Cook. She sang with the Adult Choir, and remained there until Supt. Cook became chronically ill. She transferred her membership to the Greater Mitchell C.O.G.I.C. Temple under the able leadership of Bishop John H. Sheard, she loved the Lord and Greater Mitchell Temple church family. Jewell also loved her children and grandchildren, she retired in 1992 after years of nursing services. On July 5, 1952, she was united in marriage to the late Mr. Calvin C. Howard, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Helen Y. Bordley and Regina Howard; three grandchildren, Anisa & Joseph Bordley, Jr. and Jordanuwel Howard; three great-grandchildren, Daiquan Bordley, Eric Johnson, Jr., and Emani Johnson. Mattie had two children who preceded her in death: Daniel C. and Velma R. Smith, and a dear sister, Hazel Devone, two sisters-in-law, Adrine Hawthorne and Viola Hawthorne; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
