Mary C. Wilson

Mary Catherine (Hynson) Wilson, daughter of the late Emma and George Hynson, was born on March 12, 1923 in Queen Anne's, MD. She departed this life on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at home (Dover, DE) surrounded by her loving family. She attended the Hope School (1936) which was a one room school (grades one through seven). This school still exists in Centreville MD next to Queen Anne's County High School. During the year of October 10, 2004, she was chosen to speak at the Dedication Ceremony for the Hope one-room school house since she was the oldest living member. The Hope School is open to the public during certain times of the year. After the seventh grade, she attended Kennard High. She is an Alumni of Kennard, Centreville, MD. She was employed at Price Canning, Vita Foods, Campbell Soup, and worked for Pat and Ed Nielson as a domestic engineer. She was instrumental in helping to raise their two sons, Jude and Matthew, treating them as if they were her own children. They loved her and she loved them in return. She continued to work for the Neilson's until her health declined. Mary joined Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Hope, MD at an early age. She served in the following capacities: Usher board president, Missionary Society, President, Member of the Senior Choir, secretary and treasurer of the Official Board; served as youth advisor, which included putting on plays for Christmas and Easter; served as president of the children's choir and was a Sunday School teacher. She was a devoted, dedicated and loyal member. She loved serving her God, and would witness to anyone and everyone who would listen about what the Lord had done for her. She also loved to praise her God through song. One of her favorite hymns was, “I Know the Lord Will Fix It For You". Other favorite hymns were: "Just a Closer Walk With Thee", "Sending Up My Timber", "Holding On", "Without a Mother, Without a Father", I Won't Complain", "Footprints of Jesus" and "Walking Through the Garden", just to name a few. Mary enjoyed cooking. She loved making homemade jelly, ice cream, apple pie, apple Betty, sweet potato pies, rolls, cakes and other delicious treats. Mary could cook almost anything and if you happened to stop by her home, she would offer you a plate. She always had plenty of food and was happy to share it with family and friends alike. Mary also LOVED to take scenic rides in the country and stopping for a good meal. She enjoyed shopping. She was always dressed to impress and welcomed all compliments with a smile. Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Melvin H. Wilson. To this union, six children were born. She loved and adored her family, and enjoyed family get-to-gethers, where she was able to spend quality time with her siblings, grandchildren, and other family members. After the passing of her husband, Mary relocated to Dover, DE and joined Emmanuel A.M.E. Church, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Michael Darnell Washington in 2011. On January 30, 2013, Mary was read into full membership under the pastorate of Rev. Francena Orr. She was a member of Class #2 under the leadership of Sis. Greta W. Fountain, Spiritual Advisor. She loved her pastor and Emmanuel Church Family. Mary continued to praise her God until the day God called her home. In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Melvin E. Wilson; three grandsons; Zachary, William E. and Avery and one granddaughter, Sonya. She leaves to cherish her memory her children; James Wilson (Evelyn) of Bridgeville, DE, Betty Hawkins of Wilmington, DE, William Wilson of Easton, MD, V. Darlene Turner (Gordon) of Dover, DE and Dot Davis of Wilmington, DE; 25 grandchildren: Candace Wilson, Tonya Wilson, Denise Wilson, Lainie Wilson, Jeffrey Hawkins, Michelle Skinner (Donnie), Anthony Ringgold (Marla), Antonio Wilson, Anthony Turner (Michelle), Gordon Turner, Jr., Darnell Turner, Darrell Fisher, Nelson Davis (Shamika), Rhonda Carter (Derrick), Dennis Black (Vanessa) and Keshia Brothers; 55 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren; one brother, James Hynson of Centreville, MD; two sisters, Cora Hynson and Mable Hynson of Wilmington, DE; three sisters-in-law; Elizabeth Forman of Centreville, MD, Lucy Tucker and Corrine Fields both of Philadelphia, PA; one adopted daughter, Christina Bonds, two adopted sons, Jude and Matthew Neilson and their parents, Pat, Ann and Edward; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
