Mary Ethel Stewart

Mary Ethel Jones Stewart was born in Allen, Maryland on November 27, 1924 to the late George Andrew Jones, Sr. and Minnie Rebecca Jones Dashiell. She departed this life on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the age of 89. She graduated from Salisbury Colored High School and later was joined in holy matrimony to William Thomas Stewart, Sr. for seventy years. She was employed for many years at Birds Eye in Pocomoke City, Maryland. For more than 40 years, she and her husband, William, were Somerset County bus contractors, where she drove the school bus for 36 of those years. As a wonderful and loving mother, she instilled in all of her children a sense of love and commitment to family. She and husband, William, stressed that an education was the key towards a successful future. As a result, all ten of her children graduated with Bachelor degrees and many obtained post graduate degrees. As a longtime active member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, she was the secretary of St. Mark’s Women Society of Christian Service (United Methodist Women); St. Mark’s Membership secretary; also President and a soprano of the Voices of St. Mark. In addition to singing and working diligently in her church, she was also passionate about painting, cooking, and participating in family gatherings, sight-seeing, and shopping with her daughters. She was a strong supporter of her husband, children’s and grandchildren’s athletic activities, musical performances, and any other activity, both large and small. She leaves to cherish her memory: the apple of her eye, loving and devoted husband, William, of Oaksville, MD; the center of her joy, her ten children, George (Peggy) of Salisbury, MD, William Thomas, Jr. (Lelia) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Wanda (Charles) of Salisbury, MD, Beverly (Kirk) of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carolyn (Allen) of Baltimore, MD, Doris (Roscoe) of Clinton, MD, Rev. Gary (Arlette) of Baltimore, MD, Alan (Marie) of Accokeek, MD, Anthony (Sharon) of Bowie, MD and Althea (George, Jr.) of Bowie, MD. Sixteen grandchildren are left to cherish her memory as well: Rev. Carlos, whom she raised (Amy), Andre (Chanelle), Tricia (Clifton), Ilyas, Tyrai (Lauren), Brandon, Shaynie, Ashley, Gary, Jr., Kara, Amber, Aaron, Alexis, India, Taylor and Antoine; 5 great grandchildren, one brother, Franklin Jones (Genevieve) of Fruitland, MD; one sister-in-law, Bessie Mae Jones of Salisbury, MD; one step daughter, Gloria Holder, one step granddaughter, three step great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George, Douglas and Donald (Deacon) Jones, and one sister, Lucille Sommers; her stepfather, Elmer Dashiells, Sr., stepbrothers and sisters: Eben, Elmer, Jr. (Buddy), Naomi, Mildred, and Margaret. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
