Mary Ellen Patterson

Evangelist Mary Ellen Patterson was born on October 17, 1943, to the late David Prattis Brewington and the late Lucille Scofield, in Caroline County, Maryland. She graduated from Lockerman High School in 1958, where she was a member of the Glee Club. She later met and married the love of her life, George W. Patterson, Jr. before relocating to Camden, Delaware, and together they had six beautiful children. After her husband passed, she pulled from the Lord, the strength and resilience needed to raise six children by herself. Though she experienced her fair share of trials, Mary’s faith never wavered. Despite hardship, she saw to it that her children never needed for anything. She was truly the backbone and matriarch of her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and beloved great-grandmother. Family was of the utmost importance to her as she valued spending quality time with her loved ones. Mary worked as a Food Service Manager at Delaware State University for nearly thirty years. Affectionately known as Ms. Mary or Mom Mary on campus, she took care of the students as if they were her own. She was a kind and gentle spirit, that exuded the love of God wherever she went and was a true light to the world. Mary was a proud and active member of Morning Star Institutional Church of God in Christ for over 30 years. Throughout the years, she served as President of the Usher Board, President of Young People Willing Workers, and often taught Sunday School and Bible Study. Most recently, she served as the Kent District Missionary. On October 13, 2019, she answered the call to go home and be with the Lord. Her beautiful spirit will be missed by all. Mary was preceded in death by her mother, father, and husband; her sister, Edna Brewington-Smith; her son, Troy Patterson and daughter, Lisa Patterson. Mary leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Tony Patterson (Anna); Bryan Patterson; Tracy Doman; and Rochelle Macklin (Delton); sisters, Phyllis Young and Darlene Richeson (Bruce); brother, Roth Scofield; her best friend and sister in Christ, Delores Seth. and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
