Mary Helen Dixon (Mitchell)

On Tuesday, December 22, 2020, Elder Mary Helen Dixon was rewarded with her eternal rest. Mary was born on August 24, 1951 in Elba, Alabama through the union of the late Clyde Mitchell, Sr. and Eddie Ida Felton. At age three, her family relocated to Fruitland, Maryland and later the family relocated to Salisbury, Maryland. She resided on Purnell Street for the vast majority of her life. Mary attended Cedar Lane Elementary until grade six. She attended Salisbury High School before graduating from Wicomico Senior High School in 1968. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Salisbury State University. Mary was called by God to serve and teach children and went on to fulfill her calling by touching many lives through her profession in education. She taught in Wicomico and Dorchester counties until her retirement in 2008. With a graceful spirit, a kind heart, and an impenetrable faith in God, Elder Mary Dixon served tirelessly and happily in ministry. Her Christian training was formally received at Enon Baptist Church of Deliverance in Crisfield, Maryland, under the tutelage of the late Bishop Mary Lane. She attended Faith Deliverance Bible College under the instruction of Bishop George A. Copeland. Before her departure, she was a faithful member of United Church of the First Born in Salisbury, Maryland for many years. She devoted her life to teaching the word of Jesus Christ and lived as an embodiment of the Father’s love. Mary served as Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Head, Head of the Benevolence Ministry, and member of the Gospel Choir under Elder Richard E. Morris. Mary was ordained Evangelist and later ordained Elder with over forty-five (45) years of dedication to ministry. She could always be found at the church making programs, calendars, and banners in preparation for the next event or service. Mom, Gi Gi and Aunt Mary, as she was affectionately called, adored her family and never missed an event or an opportunity to show how much she cared. She enjoyed fellowshipping, gardening, singing, traveling, especially to visit her Florida family, and a good meal. She will be remembered by all for being humble, yet outspoken. Mary is lovingly survived by: her five children, Elder Brian (Charlene) Mitchell, Denise Conway, Tracy Conway Roberts, Peter Conway, and Johnathan Grady; twelve grandchildren, Ashley (Delbert) Conway-Benson, Esquire Conway, Jade Harmon, Breanna Conway, Kasmir Conway, Caleb Mitchell, Kaela Mitchell, Jyah Grady, Jonathan Grady, Jayden Conway, Matthew Grady, and Ryan Grady; four great grandchildren, Paige Conway-McCoy, Aubrey Harmon, Logan Harmon and Isaiah Benson; one aunt, Emma Lou Morgan; one step-brother, James West, Jr.; two goddaughters, Syreeta Lane and Jarenea’ Mitchell; three nieces, one nephew, and a host of great nieces and great nephews, family in Christ, friends, and lives she has touched through ministry and education. Elder Mary Dixon was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Mitchell Sr., her mother, Eddie Ida West, her brother, Clyde Mitchell, Jr., and her sisters, Reverend Marva Bowen and Evangelist Betty Mitchell.
