MARKHANNA’S LIFE STORY Markhanna Wright, Sr., at the age of ninety-one (91), departed this life on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury, Maryland. Mark was born on August 19, 1934 to the late Nudie Wright Handy and Wainwright Teagle. He was raised in the home of his maternal grandparents, Rufus Hayes and Emma Wright, along with several uncles who were like brothers to him. Mark was educated in the Somerset County Public School System. In 1957, he joined the United States Army, where he obtained a wealth of knowledge in the United States Army Medical Division. Mark received his Christian upbringing at St. Charles United Methodist Church in Chance, Maryland at an early age. After being Honorably Discharged from the United States Army, Mark returned home to Chance, Maryland. He formerly worked as a Waterman, Oyster Shucker, Highway Construction Worker and also worked at Campbell Soup and Green Giant Companies. Prior to his retirement, Mark was employed by Somerset County and worked faithfully at the County Landfill as a Scale House Attendant for thirty-three (33) years. His dedication and work ethic were evident to all who worked alongside him. Mark was a compassionate, kind-hearted, loving, caring and peaceful man, with an easy-going spirit. His family and friendships meant the world to him. He loved being outside in the Spring and Summer and loved his dogs and cats. In his pastime, he loved collecting copper, watching old Westerns on television and listening to Country music, for which he had a great appreciation. It was something that brought him peace and relaxation. He also liked cooking and eating seafood and wild game like barbecued turtle, crab cakes, fish and oysters. Mark loved to talk; he was always ready for a good conversation and to share a good story or two. Having a conversation with him was like you couldn't get a word in edgewise, especially when he was reminiscing about old times, sharing stories about family history, ancestors, friends and current events. Mark leaves to cherish his precious memories: his three daughters, Carmella Scott (Cornell), Lolita Wright and Hope Moore (Henderson); son, Gregory Wallace; sister, Jeanette Fontaine Cottman; brother-in-law, Roland Bivens (Muriel); sisters-in-law, Dawn Handy, Sheila Young and Carrie Fontaine and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, extended family members, and friends. Mark was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Serena Bivens Wright; his parents; son, Mark Hanna Wright, Jr. and daughter Terry Weeks; brothers, Howard Shelley Handy, Wayne Young, Sr. and Marcus James Fontaine, Sr.; uncles, Vincent, Allen and Rufus Wright and special cousins, Laverne, Beverly and Orville Wright. Mark's memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him and the lasting impressions he made on all who knew him. Sorrowfully Submitted With Love ~ The Family
