Marjorie Johns (Brummell)

Marjorie M. Brummell Johns, well known as Missionary Johns, was born on August 12, 1928. She was the first daughter of the late Ethel Viola Prattis Brummell and the late Charles Elmer Brummell, Sr. The Lord sent angels down to give Missionary Johns her well-earned wings at the age of 89. Marjorie was educated in the Caroline County Public Schools. She graduated from Lockerman High School, the Class of 1945. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Ernest William Johns on April 19, 1952. Marjorie had one son, the late Melvin S. Brummell, Sr. Marjorie was a devoted and faithful member of Farmer’s Memorial Church of God in Christ. She was also a strong pillar of the church for over 50 years. She loved the Lord with all her heart and served faithfully under the leadership of Bishop Blackshear, Bishop Eurie, Mother Esther Majors, Elder Collins and Bishop George Fletcher. She was a constant prayer warrior for Christ with a mission of winning souls. Her light shined wherever she went. She served in many capacities at Farmer’s Memorial Church of God in Christ, as an Evangelist, on the Missionary Board, Sunday School Teacher, State Sunday School Superintendent for COGIC. She was a licensed and holy ghost filled evangelist and missionary. She enjoyed traveling and attending the COGIC Convocations. She opened her home to her church family to dine after church services on Sundays. She also extended her hospitality and hosted many dinners for numerous pastors and their families. She was a very generous, kind, and a hard working person. She loved immensely her family, her church family and the Jonestown community. She was well loved by her Spring Creek Nursing Center family in Harrisburg, PA, formerly Dauphin Manor, as well. Throughout her life, she was employed by Caroline Poultry and Bayshore Foods. She also worked for the Federalsburg and Preston Post offices. In addition, she also provided housekeeping services to private families. Marjorie loved to cook and she was well known for making rolls, German’s Sweet Chocolate Cake, Lemon Pound Cake and her special Sweet Potato Pies. Marjorie had a passion for gardening. Her favorite flower was the Rhododendron. Her front yard was landscaped with lavender and red rhododendron shrubs meticulously placed. Her annual spring ritual was going to the nursery in Denton to buy more rhododendrons. She also had a keen eye for home decorating. Marjorie leaves to cherish her loving memories: one brother, Charles E. Brummell, Jr. and one sister, Lorraine Brummell Smith, both of Federalsburg, MD; a daughter in-law, Ocie Lily Brummell of Harrisburg, PA; a sister in-law, Jean Prattis of Chesapeake, VA; one aunt, Lydia Roach of Bridgeville, DE and eight grandchildren: Melvin S. Brummell, Jr., Marvin D. Brummell, Michael Brummell, Mark Brummell, Matthew Brummell, Mashell Harris, Malinda Brummell, and Manuel Brummell, and numerous great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and her loyal lifelong friend and sister in Christ, Ivory Corsey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ernest William Johns, her son, Melvin S. Brummell, Sr., her grandson Malcolm Brummell and her siblings—two sisters: Eleanor Emily Brummell Parker and Joyce Mae Brummell King; and two brothers: Calvin S. Prattis and Dennis L. Brummell.
