Marcella Beatrice Kenner (Riley)

Sister Marcella Beatrice Riley Kenner, was born on November 23, 1926, in Lewes, Delaware. She was the daughter of Albert Burton and Sarah Riley Hayward. She had eight siblings; Joseph Burton, Delores Barrett, Eugene Riley, Dorothy Hayward, Virginia Hayward, William Hayward, Pauline Hayward, and Paul Hayward, who all preceded her in death. She departed this life on January 21, 2018. Marcella attended Frederick Thomas School in Lewes, and graduated from South Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1945. Sister Marcella married Llewellyn Kenner in 1952, in Salisbury, Maryland. She returned to Lewes, where she reunited with St. George African Methodist Episcopal Church. Sister Kenner started working at the church, always desiring to offer her service to the Lord God. She was an usher for two years before serving as president of the I. B. Burton User Board for 49 years. She always looked with excitement to participate in Usher Days at various churches, both in and outside of the AME connection. Sister Kenner was also a Junior Steward, and served as Church Treasurer under the leadership of Reverend Charles Dennis. Sister Kenner loved to keep her mind active by solving Crossword Puzzles, Word Searches, coloring, and recounting historical stories. She loved to cook. Sister Marcella worked at Hennessey Restaurant as a cook for 15 years, for Sports Craft for 15 years, and at Angler’s Restaurant as a cook for 15 years. She then received training and worked at Beebe Hospital for 20 years as a Nurse’s Assistant. Sister Marcella Kenner leaves to cherish her memories, a daughter, Olga Fitch, who was her nurse for many years. Mrs. Kenner was blessed to have many health care providers who lovingly cared for her, among whom are Keisha Major, Lorice Burton, Missy Curry, Michelle Cannon, Latoya Halbrook, Rebecca Manuel, Doria Cortez and Ken Meade. She also leaves nephews, Ronald Barrett, Bruce Barrett, James Hayward, Joseph Hayward and Weldon Hayward; nieces, Deborah Parker, Wanda Taylor, Cynthia Barrett, Paula K. B. Johnson, Rochelle Bell and Penny Hayward; a special sister-in-law, Grace Hansley; godson, Joseph Hayward; god-daughter, Cynthia Collick; and a host of cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
