Lucille Miller

Obituary Lucille affectionately known as “Lou” by her family and “Nina” by her grandchildren was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on December 23,1920 out of the union of Lawyer and Ollie Mae Johnson. She met Robert Miller while he served in the Army Corp of Engineers. They became inseparable and the two were later married and migrated to Philadelphia, PA with their daughter Ada Mae. Lucille always made family her number one priority. If you visited the two you would often see Robert break out his guitar and sing to Lucille song after song. They never left each other’s side -- certainly, the true definition of love and commitment. Lucille and Robert worked tirelessly, were inseparable, and they always believed in putting family first. They wanted too always provide a strong foundation of family and possessed an unmatched love and desire to support their family. In 1969, they took their love and commitment of family to Robert’s hometown of Allen, Maryland where they built their home together by hand; stone by stone. They didn’t build it just for themselves, but for each and every member of their family; actually, for anyone they knew. Lucille became gainfully employed at Salisbury State University where she worked for 20 years before retiring. She and Robert always continued to surround themselves with countless members of family and friends. They would always have huge family gatherings because as we all know, Lucille loved to cook and Robert loved to barbecue. Side note, she used to make these huge pancakes the size of a cast iron skillet. Lucille would spend days preparing for these enormous cookouts, while Robert would rise early on Saturdays to begin grilling and this gathering would continue through the entire weekend. With so many friends and family members, the children would have to sleep on the floor and family would happily sleep wherever they could. It filled her with such joy and happiness. This was a ritual that was just part of bonding with family, staying close and insuring everyone felt loved and cared for. That is who she was. Lucille had many accomplishments in her miraculous life, none bigger than returning to Night School and obtaining her GED. She led by example, and was a strong believer in education. You can only imagine early on how difficult it was for a person of color to complete their education, especially in the south. Lucille was always willing to listen, with compassion and without judgment. She would always however nudge you to do the right thing, make the right choice and be the best version of yourself. She is survived by her grandchildren, Anthony (Debra), Kenneth (Josette), Great-grandchildren Janel, Robert (Shruti), Nina, Nicholas and Kenneth II, Great-great-grandchildren Brycen, Olivia and Lorelei and a host of family and friends. Lucille was predeceased by husband, Robert Miller; her daughter; Ada Mae Goins, her parents, Lawyer and Ollie Mae Johnson; siblings, Marion (Jack), Vernon (Boot), Lawyer III (Bo), Nancy (Hun), John, Ollie Mae (Wogie), Rosa Lee (Shine), Walter (Son Boy) and Lilian (Lil).
