Loretta Burton-Jefferson

Loretta Burton-Jefferson, also known as “Brownie”, was born August 13, 1932 to the late Irvin and Susan Waples Burton in Milton, DE. She was the youngest of 10 children. She received her education in the Milton, Milford, Lincoln, Slaughter Neck, and Dover school systems. She loved to read the bible, which she knew and lived very well. She always had some spiritual wisdom to share with anyone she encountered. She greeted everyone with “Praise the Lord” or “God Bless You” followed by a handshake, and if anyone asked her how she was, her reply was always, “I’m Blessed”. She also instilled the importance of prayer and salvation in her children and grandchildren. She taught them to treat others how they would like to be treated. Loretta also liked to do word search puzzles in her spare time. She was a housekeeper for many years and she was also employed at Cargill of Harbeson, DE until her retirement. Loretta accepted Christ in her early 30s at Welcome Full Gospel Holiness Church, Lincoln DE, under the direction of Rev. David Shockley, Sr. and the late Bishop Winfred Gregory. She later moved her membership to Little Union Baptist Church, Lincoln DE, under the late Rev. Gaston Poole. Until her health started to fail, she was a faithful member of the Lincoln Pentecostal Church of God under the leadership of Bishop Marion Hendricks. She was preceded in death by her husband John M. Jefferson; six children, Charles Burton, Francis Burton, Baby boy Burton, Jennifer Burton, Louella Gibbs, and Dorothy Raby; one brother, Milton Burton; and five sisters Margaret Burton, Louella Burton, Dorothy Lofland, Ora Beckett, and Jean Parker. She leaves to cherish her memories three daughters, Ora Gibbs (Thomas) of Atlanta, GA, Priscilla Burton of Dover, DE, and Felisa Hazzard (Granville) of Slaughter Neck, DE; three sons, Freeman Burton of Camden, DE, Harold Burton (Brenda) of Felton, DE, and Joseph Burton of Dover, DE, 20 grandchildren, and a host of great and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, numerous friends, and church family.
