Linwood Toppin Sr.

Linwood Toppin, Sr. was born on January 4, 1936 to the late Harry James Toppin, Sr. and Magdaline Mills in Onley, Virginia. He surrendered to God's call for eternal rest on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at the Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewis, Delaware. Linwood attended public schools in Accomack County, Virginia and Sussex County, Delaware. He met and married a beautiful, young Elaine Pitts on 27 June 1959. To this union were born five children - Linda, Brenda, Carlene, Linwood Jr. and Urone. He loved his family and was an excellent provider for his wife and children. He was a dedicated employee at Purdue for 29 years where he was responsible for all aspects of the maintenance department. He was also a multi-talented employee for Buntings Nurseries for 15 years, doing many versatile jobs. While Linwood enjoyed his family, he was also a faithful member of Missionary Baptist Church. He was appointed to the position of Trustee; he was the President of the usher board and started the men's fellowship. He loved to travel (especially to Florida), looking at his Cowboy Western movies on TV with his children, and tinkering on his cars, trucks, and lawn mowers. He loved using silicon to fix everything which was his all purpose, go to remedy. We enjoyed his made up songs and he got a kick out of playing jokes on the grandchildren as well as his grown children. He never knew a stranger and he loved people. He was preceded in death by his mother, Magdaline Toppin, his brother, Danny Toppin and his father Harry Toppin, Sr. To cherish his loving memory, he leaves his beautiful wife of 54 years, Elaine Toppin; two sons, Linwood Toppin, Jr (Lisa), Charlotte, NC and Urone Toppin (Ann) Whitehall, PA; three daughters, Linda (Kevin) Fields, Woodbridge, VA, Brenda Toppin, Frankford, DE, and Carlene Toppin, Millsboro, DE; two sisters, Gladys Satchell, Millsboro, DE and Lena Clemment, Wilmington, DE; and three brothers, Robert Toppin (Gertrude), Rochester, NY, James Toppin (Betty Ann), Wilmington, DE and Harry Toppin (Linda), Wilmington, DE; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Linwood was a faithful man of God who loved the Lord. Although his health prevented him from being as active as he would love to have been, he fought a good fight and ran a good race.
