LILLIE MAE SIMPSON’S JOURNEY Surrounded by family, Lillie Mae Simpson peacefully departed this life on February 9, 2023 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, MD. She was 91 years old. The second of six children, Lillie was born on August 22, 1931 in Caroline County, Maryland to the late Reverend John H. and Helen M. Thomas Simpson. In addition to her parents, Lillie was preceded in death by a son, Lester A. “Slow” Simpson, daughter-in-law, E. Yvonne Simpson; sisters, Viola R Simpson, Helen A. Dashiell, Mary C. Church, brother-in-law, George T Church, Sr., brother John I. Simpson and one great-grandchild, James R. Simpson III. She was christened at the Methodist Episcopal Church located near Ridgely MD in June 1932. She attended schools in Caroline and Wicomico counties; graduating in June 1950 from Salisbury High School. For more than 35 years, Lillie was a Nursing Assistant in the Nursery (Labor and Delivery) at Peninsula General Hospital (now Tidal Health). During retirement, she worked as a foster grandparent in Wicomico County as part of Shore-Up’s Foster Grandparent Project. Lillie was a quiet, gentle, thoughtful and caring Mom, Grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, and aunt. Though she seldom raised her voice to anyone, you knew to beware when she did. She loved playing cards and the daily lottery. As her health began failing, she could be found sitting in her favorite chair or lying in bed watching television, especially the ‘soaps’ and the Warriors’ basketball games. Her apartment door was usually open and if you knocked she would say, “It’s open” or “Come in”, welcoming you into her home with a smile or questioning look. Mourning her passing are: four children, James R. (Fonnette) Simpson, Sr., Sylvia D. Simpson, (Daniel Curtis), Gary L. (Angie) Simpson, Sr. all of Salisbury, MD, and Tammy M. (Eric, Sr.) Turner; of Athens GA, and one brother, Donald E. Simpson of Salisbury. Additionally, she will be sadly and lovingly missed by: 17 grandchildren, James R. Simpson II and Brandee Rivera, both of Salisbury, Gregory “Kim” Neal of Northern Virginia, Dechelle Joynes and Daniele Curtis, both of Salisbury, Dante M. Curtis of Princess Anne, MD, Ananas “Neicy” Simpson of Fruitland, MD, Albert “Bert” Simpson, Byron M. Simpson, Dustin Simpson, Tempress Simpson, DeMar Purnell, Gary “Boo” Simpson and LaKeisha “Kiki” Simpson, all of Salisbury, Erica J. (Darius) Turner of Georgia, Eric J. Turner, Jr. of Salisbury and Mark Turner of Georgia; 33 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
