Leroy B Hayes Sr.

Leroy Bernard Hayes, Sr. was born July 31, 1947 to the late John and Frances Hayes in Harlem, New York. The trumpet sounded and God called his precious soul to rest after a prolonged illness on February 10, 2014 at his residence in Smyrna, Delaware. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. He was the widower of Daisy “Cookie” Williams, who preceded him in death in 2006. He was also predeceased by his daughter Tiffany Hayes, brother, John Hayes and sister, Francine Fasion. He received his early education in the public schools of New York. He also worked for the State of New York in the public school system for over twenty-eight years. His last position was an assistant cook at IS 59. While living in New York, he was a father, uncle, and mentor to many of the neighborhood kids. He always told you the truth, with a smile, then sent you on your way. While on the block of 112th Avenue, he was named the neighborhood watch, since he spent so much time sitting in the window. He moved to Delaware in 2006 to live with his son and daughter-in-law and began working at Wal-Mart in the building and maintenance department as a facilities maintenance custodian. He retired from working in 2010. While in Delaware, his great grandchildren affectionately named him “Buddy.” He was known for walking them to the store so they can buy there candy and other junk food. He will be greatly missed as he leaves behind to honor his life his son, Leroy Hayes Jr. and daughter-in-law Melinda of Smyrna, DE, mother in-law Isabelle Williams of Queens, New York, two brothers, Tyrone of St. Louis, MO and Robert Hayes of New York, one sister, Marcella Hayes of Smyrna, DE, one sister in-law Lorraine Coleman (Curtis) of St Albans, New York, one brother in-law, Melvin "TC" Williams (Sharon) of Brooklyn, New York. Grand Children Ernest Jones, Najada Hayes, Michael Francois, Kassidy Hayes-Rivers. Great Grandchildren Dominic Jones, Jayden Hayes, extended family members Mac Fasion, Robert (Veronica) Leary, Thomas Leary, Sharod, Tyshika , Deanna, Jasmine, Deont'e, and Tyshawn Hayes. Gregory Sr., Gregory Jr. Katiana, Cadin, and Lexi Jones, Jonathan Freeman, Nakenji Graham, Shaymell, Leyquanda, Nyasia, Isiah, Elijah, and Tiffany Leary and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
