Leigh’s Journey “And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be anymore pain; for the former things have passed away...Behold, I make all things new….” Revelation 21:4-5 (NKJV) Our all wise, all knowing, most merciful Father knew it was time for Leigh Hunt Furr to join His “Great Cloud of Witnesses,” so on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, He sent His death angel to Genesis Healthcare to bring Leigh Hunt back to Him. Leigh Hunt quietly, peacefully and willingly joined the angel who led him to his place of eternal rest. Leigh was born on April 25, 1938 to the late Samuel B. and Hester D. Furr. He grew up in a happy, Christian home with 7 other siblings. Throughout his childhood years and all of his adult life, he was a kind, humble and peaceful man. He graduated from Salisbury Colored High School in 1956. Because he had such a penchant for tinkering on televisions, he attended a technical school in Camden, New Jersey with the hope of perfecting his skills. “Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but only the plan of God will prevail,” and just as the Apostle Paul had a thorn in his flesh, so did Leigh. Leigh Hunt’s thorn in the flesh was seizures. His first seizure occurred at age 11 and the seizures never completely stopped. Although he loved playing sports, he was never allowed to play because of seizures. His enrollment in the Technical School was halted because it was there that he had a grand mal seizure which caused him to be hospitalized for a week. Following his release from the hospital he returned home. The seizures ended his aspirations of continuing his education, but his setback did not break his spirit. Leigh was a humble, God fearing man who was able to accept whatever God had for him. He joined Mt. Enoch Holiness Church and was a faithful member who rarely missed a Bible Study. He loved studying the Bible and became a Bible scholar. Presiding Elder Robinson and the entire Mt. Enoch membership warmly embraced Leigh to such an extent that he considered the church family his second family. The Furr family is so pleased with the “Amazing Grace” (his favorite hymn) that Leigh received at Mt. Enoch. In 1999, Leigh Hunt’s health condition dictated that he would need to reside at Genesis Healthcare (formerly Salisbury Nursing Home) where he remained until he left to go to his eternal home. This change of residence did not break his spirit. He continued to attend Bible class every Tuesday. As they discussed the Bible in their small groups, if Leigh heard something being said that he knew was not correct, in his humble manner he would say, “I don’t think you got that quite right.” They would check the Bible and find out that he was right. They would congratulate him on his astuteness of Bible facts and for keeping them on track. He was looked upon as their “Go to Bible Expert.” Leigh Hunt had fond memories of his sister, Lillian Hearn, who is currently 101 years old. He held a special bond with his sister, Clara Sample, who truly exemplified the meaning of “My Brother’s Keeper,” for she faithfully, untiringly and lovingly supported her brother by visiting him often, and during the last year, she visited daily, doing all she could for as long as he was here on earth. Leigh cherished, welcomed, appreciated and looked forward to those daily visits and the many goodies she always brought. As Leigh Hunt enters those Pearly Gates, in addition to his parents, he will be united with his brothers, Alexander, Samuel Clinton, William and Donald Furr and his sister, Ethel Furr Robertson, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by two sisters, Lillian Hearn of Salisbury, MD and Clara Sample of Delmar, MD and several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Leigh Hunt fought a good fight, did not complain for the life he lived and now has heaven to gain. When God called him home, from us he did depart, but his memories will live right here in our hearts.
