Kay Francis Slacum

KAY’S STORY... Kay Francis Slacum, at the age of eighty-seven (87), departed this life peacefully on March 1, 2025, with her family by her side at Compass Regional Hospice in Centreville, Maryland. Kay was born on July 12, 1937 to the late Mary E. Jenkins (Slacum) and James E. Jolley. She was born and raised in Dorchester County, Maryland, where she attended public schools. Kay held various positions throughout her career, but a majority of her career was spent at Coldwater Seafood Corporation in Cambridge, Maryland, where she retired after twenty-eight (28) dedicated years, in June of 1999. After retirement, she went on to work at the Hurlock Senior Center and was the grandma at SHORE UP! Inc. Head Start in Hurlock, Maryland, where she was loved and adored by the children and their families. Kay Francis, as she was affectionately known, was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Methodist Church, now known as Faith Community United Methodist Church in East New Market, Maryland, serving under numerous pastors and the present pastor, Reverend Ashley L. Jones. During her time there, Kay sang on the choir, served on the kitchen committee, and was one of the founding members of the very talented group, The Brownettes Gospel Singers, led by James W. Camper. To know Kay is to know that her children were her entire life. As the matriarch of our family, she was the heart of our existence and a constant source of love, wisdom and warmth, mixed with a little bit of spice here and there. Her kindness and strength have left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Kay was an outstanding cook and had no problems feeding anyone whom she came across. There wasn’t anything that Kay Francis couldn’t cook but was best known for her chicken and dumplings. You were never going to be hungry, if Kay had anything to do with it. Kay is survived by: her daughters, Gwendolyn Turner (Daryl) of Seaford, Delaware, Darlene Moulden of Cambridge, Maryland, Wilmeta Slacum of Federalsburg, Maryland and Terry Hopkins (Charles) of Cambridge, Maryland; son, Darrence Slacum (Sharon) of Easton, Maryland; a bonus son, Rodney Griffin of Hurlock, Maryland; sisters, Rhoda Palmer of Hurlock, Maryland and Annette Wilson of Cambridge, Maryland; grandchildren, Tanisha Slacum of Cambridge, Maryland, whom she raised as her own, Kajiyah Slacum of Easton, Maryland, Keosha Blake of Easton, Maryland and Kathy Gray of Salisbury, Maryland; great grandchildren, Malai’ah Holmes and Nehlani Slacum, both of Easton, Maryland; aunt, Lillian Slacum of East New Market, Maryland; two very special helpers, Carl and Aaron Jones, both of Hurlock, Maryland and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, William R. Jenkins, Sr. and Rudolph Jenkins, Jr.; sisters, Mary Sharp and Helen Young and a daughter, Conchita Walls.
