Katherine E. Newton

Katherine Queen Elizabeth Carroll Newton (98) was born on November 7, 1917 to the late Walter Carroll and Beulah Heath Carroll in Queenstown, Maryland. Elizabeth transitioned from this life on June 30, 2016 in a peaceful sleep at home. She was lovingly cared for by her youngest daughter, Mary Marie Townsend for the last six years of her life. Elizabeth was educated in Queen Anne's County, Maryland and worked as a charwoman for various families. In 1931, Elizabeth met and married Edward Leon Newton to whom she was married for 66 years until his death and from that union eight children were born. She had several names; Mom, Lizzie, Aunt Lizzie, Mum-Mum, Mommol, Grandmom, and Queen Elizabeth. She was the oldest member of her nine siblings. Lizzie was an active member of Bethel AME Church in Church Hill, Maryland for over 80 years, where she served under the leadership of many Pastors. At an early age she was baptized and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was happiest when she was serving God and attending church. She also loved to sing in the senior choir and was a devoted missionary member. Lizzie served as one of the church mothers, where she sat quietly with her church family to ensure she was comfortable later in her life. Mommol loved nice things, and loved to attend all family events and could bake a “MEAN” sweet potato pie, white potato pie, homemade rolls, and cakes, and don't forget the homemade ice cream. "Boy she could cook!" Mum-Mum's home was a well-known spot to get your eat-on and have a Grand Ole Time! Grandmom had a loyal soul and always made herself available to lend a helping hand to her family, friends and church. Mom worked diligently as a resourceful homemaker canning various fruits and vegetables from her garden, designing hand-made quilts, and creating crafts with crochet yarn. Aunt Lizzie was a stylish dresser, sewing many of her clothes for her children and herself. There was nothing that the Queen couldn't do, she was a "phenomenal woman". Queen Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Carroll and Beulah Heath Carroll; two sons, John Newton, Joe Newton, Sr.; one daughter, Catherine Rhyanes; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; three brothers, Solomon Carroll, Arthur Little and Charles Little; six sisters; Etta Mae Little, Henrietta Gibbs, Pauline Little, Beulah Fenwick, Sadie Warner and Sarah Morgan and don't forget her dog, "Butch". She leaves to cherish her wonderful memories two daughters; Martha Brown of Howell, New Jersey and Mary Marie Townsend of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three sons, Herbert (Joyce) Newton of Middletown, Delaware, Robert (Brenda) Newton of Centreville, Maryland and David (Toysand) Newton of Smyrna, Delaware; two daughters-in-law, Rev. Grace Newton and Nancy Newton; 42 grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren, 80 great-great-great grandchildren and five great-great-great-great grandchildren.
