Johnnie Ulysses Brown

Johnnie Ulysses Brown was a man who lived with dignity, honor, and integrity. He was a man of good character and was faithful to God, his family, his fellow person and his country. The youngest child of Sylvester and Tressie Brown, Johnnie was born on October 17, 1937, in Roe, Arkansas. There, Johnnie accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Liberty Mission Baptist Church, where he was a faithful member until moving away from the area as a young man. Johnnie continued to seek spiritual growth throughout his adult life and remained active in the church. He attended public schools until he was drafted into the military. Johnnie served two tours in Vietnam, and various other locations in the Continental United States. He received numerous awards and decorations for his achievements and service. Johnnie retired from the military after 20 years of honorable service to his country. Upon completing his active military service, Johnnie became a full-time student at Rutgers University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology with honors. After his service in the military and scholastics at Rutgers; Johnnie, enjoyed a second rewarding career as a New Jersey State Investigator in the Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Law for 20 years. Johnnie was a lifetime member of several civic organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Disabled American Veterans – NJ Chapter 27, The American Legion – Post 0002 and held a lifetime membership in the National Order of Trench Rats, Dugout 490. Johnnie passed away peacefully on the same day of his birth October 17, 2016, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE. Both his parents, along with his sister Willie Mae (Brown) Mitchell, two brothers, Roy and Joe Louis Brown and his son, Steven J. Brown, preceded him in death. Johnnie leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of forty-seven years, Vertie E. Brown; three sisters, Alize (Brown) Jamison, Ressie (Brown) Scales, and Flave (Brown) Boykin and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
