John "Johnny" Douglas Wescott

John “Johnny” Douglas Wescott, Sr., son of the late Thomas E. Wescott and Lena Beatrice Poole Wescott, was born on October 8, 1936 in Northampton County, Virginia and departed this life on Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland. At an early age, Johnny, along with his brother “ Billy,” went to live with their father in Trenton, New Jersey where he attended the New Jersey public school system. After leaving school, he gained employment with DeLoenzo Waste Mgmt., which later became Nation Waste Mgmt. in Trenton. He was gainfully employed for over 40 years. Prior to his retirement, he dedicated his faith and received Christ as a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Trenton, New Jersey. He was a dedicated Christian. When illness befell him, it led him to become a resident at several Skilled Nursing facilities in New Jersey, until he decided that he wanted to be with his Maternal family. His sister Maggie “Chee Chee” and his niece Carla Wescott traveled to NJ and brought him home where resided with Chee Chee and husband Leroy and was cared for by “Chee Chee” as his primary caregiver. Everyone who knew Johnny will always remember his love of food, especially fried chicken and eggs and his favorite saying was “Yummy Yummy for my tummy.” Johnny would feel remiss if special thanks and dedication weren't given to one of his favorite “girls”, Gwendolyn Patricia Upshur, with Caring Touch Health Services in Belle Haven, Virginia, who truly dedicated her love, care and commitment for him with great nursing skills. His other two favorite “girls” were “Chee Chee” and Carla, who he dubbed his “Johnny’s Angels.” His favorites were listening to Gospel every Sunday starting with Bobby Jones Gospel followed by Family Worship Center and his other days listening to C & W music and looking at westerns . Those who preceded him in death were his brothers, William “Billy” Wescott and Vernon Brickhouse, his sister, Nellie Poole Thomas and his son Ronnie Wescott. He leaves as his survivors his estranged wife, Ruby and left to cherish the good times and memories are: his children, Wilber Hampton of Capron, VA, John “Jay” Wescott, Jr. of Cherry Hill, NJ, Joy Wescott of Hampton, VA, Marsha “Butch” of Trenton, NJ and Leslie Brown of Ewing NJ; brothers Roy Smith of Exmore, VA, Charles Wescott (Margie) and David Wescott of Machipongo, VA; sisters Dora Merion of Belle Haven, VA, Josephine Goodwyn (Samuel) of Eastville, VA, Joyce Wescott of Mercerville, NJ and Maggie “Chee-Chee” Williams (Leroy) of Quinby, VA; brother-in-law, George Thomas of Reedtown, VA; uncle William Wescott (Hope); aunt Edna “Shorty” Smith of Trenton, NJ; 14 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
