Joan Joanne Henry (Potter)

Joan “Joanne” Potter Henry was born on August 22, 1934, to the late Raymond Manokey and Anna Wilson Potter. She departed this life surrounded by her loving daughters on September 24, 2018, at the age of 84. Joan earned her High School Diploma from The James Grove Adult Education program in Georgetown, DE. She attended Apex Beauty Culture School, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she became a licensed beautician. Throughout her life she worked as a homecare provider and in the Foster Grandparent Program. She also worked as a Judge of Elections for the Department of Elections. She began her Christian journey at Union Baptist Church, Easton, Maryland, under the tutelage of Reverend Crudup. She later attended John Wesley United Methodist Church, McDaniel, Maryland. Joan joined Mt. Calvary AME Church, Seaford, Delaware, and continued her Christian journey as she supported her husband in ministry to Burton Chapel AME Church, Milton, Delaware, and St. James Union AME Church, Frederica, Delaware. Later in life she was affiliated with both Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church, Seaford, Delaware, and Agape Temple International Ministries, Greenwood, Delaware. She was a member of the Homecoming Choir and served on Missionary and Usher Boards. She also sang with the Sussex Community Choir. Joan loved putting puzzles together, doing word find, shopping and visiting with family and friends. On October 12, 1967, she married the late Pastor Hayward Preston Henry, and together they raised their ten children and six foster sons. In addition to her husband and her mother and father, Joanne was preceded in death by her stepfather, Charles Potter; daughter, Marilyn Faith Brown; grandchildren, Tysheka, Ticara and Tadrian Ennals; sisters, Doris Clack, Bernice Merrill, Elaine Jenkins, Doris Copper, Jean Brummell, Althea DeVan; and brothers, William Potter and Paul Floyd. She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Charlotte Simmons, Millersville, MD; Hope Henry, Georgetown, DE; Avis Henry, Seaford, DE; Sheila Henry, Boston, MA; and Bonnie Ennals, Cambridge, MD; sons, Terence Henry, East New Market, MD; Demetrius (Pambla) Henry, Lynchburg, VA; Gordon Henry (Helen), Annapolis, MD; Ray Powell, Las Vegas, NV; sister, Anna Mae Brooks, of Easton, MD; brothers-in-law, Leon Brummell, David Henry, William (Gloria) Henry, Dwight Henry (Meredith), Eric Henry (Nadine), Monte Henry; sisters-in-law, Pamela (Jill) Henry-Lambert; Marla Baines (Harold); 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
