Obituary for Jessica Elaine Johnson Melton Jessica Elaine Johnson Melton was born to Anthony, Sr. and Cheryl Johnson on February 21, 1984 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, DE. She was the final piece to the Johnson family puzzle. After enduring a short illness, she departed this life on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the University of Maryland Hospital, in Baltimore MD. Jessica was educated in the Seaford School System and graduated in 2002. Immediately following High School, she attended Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. She quickly changed directions and decided to pursue her passion – cosmetology. Jessica followed in her mother’s footsteps and enrolled in the Delmarva Beauty Academy. Jessica and her friends enjoyed being stylish, beating each other’s faces, and styling each other’s hair; from ponytails, to extensions & weaves, and so much more. Jessica was dedicated to showcasing her God-given creativity, and she did it well. Along with being creative, Jessica has always been a scholarly individual, always earning the Honor Roll throughout school. She was very involved in extracurricular activities and was extremely social. In Middle School, she played softball, and even on the field she was more talkative and social than athletic. However, when it came to Cheerleading, that's where she excelled. She used her loud and booming voice to propel the athletic teams and hype the crowd. Jessica was reared in a Christian household. She and her family attended church regularly. She was a member of Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church, where she attended Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Christian Education Congress, and many other activities. Like all of the other youth, she was an active member of the Youth Choir, where she sang and led songs like I Can’t Forget. It was not uncommon to see her dancing on the liturgical dance team, ushering, lighting the candles as an Acolyte, and taking part in the Worship service. Christmas and Easter plays and recitations were the beginning of where we saw and were amazed at her theatrics and drama blossoming. Jessica was affectionately called “Stick Woman” by family and was very active. As a child, she was on the go. She was always out riding her bike with her Barbie ponytail in the wind. As she spent much of her time outside, she happened to take a liking to the neighbors - The Henry’s. She liked them, and they liked her. So much so that you could often find her over to their home or cruising with them. Jessica rarely ever met a stranger and had many friends and extended family members with whom she spent her time. She would be sighted in Delmar, Seaford, in Concord and even in the DMV (DC) area. No grass had time to grow under her feet. She was not timid and had no issues being on the go and away from her immediate family. Jessica was known for her infectious laughter and comedic personality. If you were privileged to know Jessica during her teenage years, you know about “the boot.” Her Dad purchased Jessica a red Ford Festiva. Her initial response was that she hated it because it was a stick shift. That was short lived. She had that little car in the wind. It hit every back road known and unknown to Delaware. As an adult, Jessica became a Steelers Football fanatic. She loved to watch, attend live games and root for the team. She didn’t do this alone, however. She and her Dad shared a common love for the Steelers. Jessica - being ever so devoted - even bought tickets for the two of them, and they drove to a Pittsburgh game. If her Dad was at work during the game, she would call and give him a play by play of the game. Grottos was a Sunday hangout to watch the game. They would be dressed in their Steelers gear and ready to cheer them on from a distance. Jessica was the truest definition of A Daddy’s Girl. With all of her expressive love and patience, Jessica couldn’t help but to love children, especially her Jayah, whom she absolutely adored. Jessica was “gifted” her only child, Jayah, in 2009. She cared for her as if her own life depended on it and provided for her every need and desire. Jessica’s family became complete when she met her “bae,” Deon Melton, the love of her life in Brew River in Salisbury. She and her friend Lee Till went to a club and it was love at first sight. Deon and Jessica united in Holy Matrimony on October 17, 2020. Their wedding and weekend was an entire vibe. It was visible to everyone who met them that Deon loved Jessica and Jessica loved Deon. Jessica was preceded in death by her “Pop Pop”, Alonzo Dredden; maternal grandmother,Amelia Roach; paternal grandmother Charlotte Brummell; paternal grandfather Alfred Johnson; uncles, Roland Roach and Carl Roach. She leaves to cherish her memories: her devoted husband, Deon Melton; her beautiful daughter, Jayah Taylor; her parents, Anthony, Sr. and Cheryl Johnson; her only sibling - her brother - Rev. Anthony Johnson Jr. (Shawanda); her niece and nephew, Shanae Johnson and Anthony “Tre” Johnson, III. She also leaves her maternal grandfather, Roland H. Roach, Sr. (Doris); maternal great aunt Carol D. Greene (Albert); maternal aunts, Persephone Deas (Whitt), Dawn Chase (David), Terri Lynn Seriki (Oladipo); and maternal uncles, George Roach (Stephanie);Carnez Collins; Dale Roach; her paternal aunts, Shirley Jones (Bruce); Shivron Johnson; and paternal uncle, Tyrone Johnson; and her mother-in-law, Lelia Melton. She had two god children, Nova Spady and Kayla Evans, who she adored. Jessica would not have been complete without her special friends and classmates, Shena Coverdale and Ashley Cornish, who also preceded her in death. Lastly, but certainly not least, Jessica leaves behind a host of family and loved ones who will remember her fondly.
