James M Scott

James M. Scott, son of the late John and Christina Scott, was born November 14, 1948. James received his education at Lockerman High School in Denton, Maryland and graduated in 1966. In 1968 he joined the United States Army and served two years in Vietnam where he earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Ribbon and the Bronze Star. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1970. He was employed with the Capital School District as a Custodian from 1978, retiring December, 2008. In addition to this, James worked part-time as a Visiting Artist in Music at Faith Elementary and Middle School 1986-2011. James was united in Holy Matrimony to Helen Delois Bordley on July 18, 1970. To this union was born one son, James Eric Scott. James enjoyed his family. He loved children and loved pinching the “cheeks” of his many nieces and nephews when they were babies. James was well known in the community for his love of music, by which many have been blessed for the past 56 years. He began his music ministry at Ferrells Church, later at Mt. Zion U.M. Church where he formed a gospel ensemble the Zionettes. He was a member of New Beginnings U.M. Church in Ridgely, Maryland where he also served as a Certified Lay Servant, Church Treasurer, and Choir Director. James assisted over 30 singing groups, special programs, funerals, banquets, prayer breakfasts, etc. He also shared his music ministry with his wife, Helen, who assisted with concerts, traveling not only the city of Dover but throughout the Delaware and Maryland areas. It has been said that, “if James could not find your key on the piano, then you just couldn’t sing.” He was a mentor to many young people and he had a gift for bringing out the hidden musical abilities of his students. James was the musician for Minus Funeral Home, Bennie Smith Funeral Home for a number of years and occasionally for Pippin Funeral Home until he became ill. James departed this life on July 12, 2016. He was preceded in death by his father, John Scott and mother, Christina Scott; two brothers, Howard and Thomas; one sister, Karen. James leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 46 years, Helen Delois Scott; one son, Pastor Eric Scott (Okemah) of Chestertown, Maryland; two brothers, Samuel Scott (Faye) of Dover, Delaware, Matthew Scott (Jean) of Marydel, Maryland; six grandchildren, Ezri, Sean, Eric, Jr., Lecia, Jaylin and Christian; mother-in-law, Gertrude Bordley; three goddaughters, LaTasha Scott, Tandi Cain and Kimberly Bordley; four sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law; a host of other relatives, friends, and many who have adopted him as “Uncle James”.
