Irma V. Coleman

Irma Virginia Coleman, daughter of Ruth Matthews and Cecil Roberts, was born September 29, 1942 in Onancock, Virginia. Irma peacefully entered into eternal rest on March 18, 2013 at home. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ellsworth Coleman, Jr., and brother, Wendell Matthews. Irma worked for over 30 years at Woolworth’s in Milford where she made many lifelong friends. Everyone loved her and would come in just for conversation and maybe a sandwich or slice of pie. She worked there and delighted many customers from 1969 until its closing. She then worked at Milford Center Genesis Elder Care for ten years doing housekeeping. She spread her great spirit and cheer to the residents as well as the staff. On October 29, 1983, Irma was united in Holy Matrimony to Ellsworth Coleman, Jr. They were happily married until Ellsworth’s death in 1994. They spent many days fishing, talking and praising the Lord together. They loved their family and friends and would do anything for any of them. Irma frequented Wilson’s Auction every Saturday and the Salvation Army every day of the week she could. People in both places really loved her and were always glad to see her. Irma was a loving Christian woman who put God first in all she did. She was a devoted member of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Milford, DE since 1969. She loved to sing more than anything and was a member of the Senior Choir, Steward Board and the Usher Board until she became too sick to attend. Irma truly loved the Lord and tried to instill that into her children and grandchildren. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: four children: Karen Reynolds (Antonio) of Lincoln, DE; Tony Matthews (Karen) of Milford, DE; Sylvia White (Mac Anthony) of Milford, DE; and Otho Davis (Heather) of Elkton, MD. Two step-daughters: Aquilla Harris of Milford, DE and Quintella Coleman of Harrington, DE. Five sisters: Bernice George (Charles) of Daleview, NC; Paulette Victory (Michael) of Virginia Beach, VA; Hermaine Matthews of Onancock, VA; Betty Fletcher of Parksley, VA, and Tammy Tyler of Durham, NC; as well as one brother, Cecil Matthews (Alice) of Patterson, NJ; one brother-in-law, Ivan Coleman of Harrington, Delaware, four sisters-in-law; Vera Hunter of Dover, Delaware, Cleo (Ernest) Young of Bowers Beach, Delaware, Wanda (Glenn) Scanes of Rockledge, Florida and Rev. Badelia (Frank) Commodore of Barkley, Maryland. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and two very special friends: Wanda Tiggs and Patsy Kellam.
