Irene Brittingham

Irene T. Brittingham (Candy) was born in Fort Gaines, Georgia on January 24, 1936. Irene was the daughter of the late Isaac and Cassie Thompson. On July 25, 2016, Irene Brittingham passed away at Courtland Manor Nursing home in Dover, Delaware. Irene attended Benjamin Banneker School in Milford, and William Henry School in Dover, Delaware. She was a dedicated employee at Fisherman Wharf Restaurant. She enjoyed volunteer work at the Just Soup Ministry. In 1941 Irene moved to Delaware with her family. Later on she met the love her life, Joshua Brittingham. Irene and Joshua were united in holy matrimony on October 25, 1958. For the first few years, Irene and Joshua lived on Cave Neck Road in Milton, Delaware, where their first three children were born. Soon thereafter, they moved to Fisher Road in the Cool Spring area of Milton where they raised six daughters and two sons. Irene T. Brittingham will be best known and recognized as a loving and caring wife, mother, sister, daughter, caregiver, and dedicated Christian. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at the age of ten under the late Pastor Ancle Manns. After marriage she became a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Zion Holy Church, Milton, Delaware for 58 years. As a member of Mt. Zion Holy Church, Irene served as a secretary of the Sunday School, a member of the Senior and Mass Choirs, a Vacation Bible School Assistant, Kitchen Aide, and a Sexton. Her favorite songs were ‘Sanctuary’, ‘I Saw the Light’, ‘O, The Virtue Gone Out’ and ‘Won’t It Be Grand’. Irene was preceded in death by her husband Joshua Brittingham (2007), and her brother Tyrone Thompson (2014). Irene T. Brittingham is survived by Joyce Brittingham of Dover, DE, Joshua Brittingham, Jr., (Holly) of Somers, NY, Veronica Staton (James) of Lewes, DE, Bonita Marshall (Emory) of Newark, DE, Teresa Miller (Henry) of Millsboro, DE, Irene Sybrena Yette (Bryan) of Wilmington, DE, Craig Brittingham (Jessica) of Milwaukee, WI, Aretha Greene (Jerry) of Bridgeville, DE; seventeen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, in-laws and a host of nieces and nephews.
