Helen Delois Scott (Bordley)

Helen D. Scott, daughter of the late Elder Fred and Gertrude Bordley, was born September 25, 1946. Helen received her education at William Henry High School. She worked as a senior secretary in the Athletics Department at Delaware State University, from which she retired after 32 years of dedicated service. Helen was united in Holy Matrimony to James M. Scott on July 18, 1970. To this union was born one son, James Eric Scott. Helen enjoyed baking, singing and family gatherings. She adored her grandchildren. Any chance she got, she gave them a few dollars – often without Eric knowing (so she thought). Helen was known by many in the family and community for her cake baking. The house was often filled with the aroma of freshly baked cakes. She would have to remind James and Eric, “Don’t touch that, it’s not for home!” Eric was caught on several occasions, sneaking icing from the refrigerator. Then came grandchildren – Jaylin swiped a whole editable flower from a decorated cake. Helen was very devoted to her church, New Beginnings United Methodist Church. She served as Church Secretary, and on various ministries (Good Samaritan, Ridgely Meadows Outreach, Faithful Harvest & Culinary), Membership Committee, Women's Gospel Choir and Combined Choir. She also served as secretary for the Building Board Committee. Together, James and Helen sang and rendered concerts for more than 40 years, traveling wherever and whenever they were asked. They had concerts in PA, VA, MD, DE and surrounding areas and were glad to lift their voices in praise to the Lord whenever they were asked to sing. Helen departed this life on Saturday, March 13, 2021. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James M. Scott; father, Fred Bordley; mother, Gertrude Bordley; a brother, John Bordley; and two sisters, Beatrice Tolson and Dorothy Moore. Helen leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Pastor James Eric Scott, Sr. (Okemah) of Chestertown, MD; six grandchildren, Ezri (Desirae), Sean, Eric, Jr., Lecia, Jaylin and Christian; two brothers, William Bordley (Lillian) of Wyoming, DE and David Bordley (Linda) of Dover, DE; two sisters, Anna Quail of Dover, DE and Doris Watson (Herb) of Hockessin, DE; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; three goddaughters, LaTasha Scott, Tandi Cain and Kimberly Bordley; as well as a host of other relatives and friends, many of whom have adopted her as, “Aunt Helen”.
