Hallie Beatrice Holbrook

HALLIE’S JOURNEY... Hallie Beatrice Holbrook, daughter of the late Melvin Holbrook and Estella Robinson Holbrook, departed this life on Sunday, April 4, 2021. Hallie was born in Venton, Maryland on June 22, 1930, and educated in the Somerset County public school system. At an early age, Hallie became a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Venton, Maryland where she regularly attended summer school and other activities at the church. Later in life she served on several committees as well as the choir. She was a dynamite seamstress, a great hair dresser and a wonderful cook. And don’t get us started on the sticky buns she would make; they were fantastic. The bond that she shared with her three sisters was like no other. They were as tight as glue as they were raised by their mother to always support each other. We’ve often said if one knows they all know. Several years later, Grace United Methodist Church merged with the church communities of Mount Vernon and Polks Road. As a result, they became Trinity United Methodist Community Worship Center in Mount Vernon, Maryland. At Trinity, Hallie continued to be a faithful member. She held the position as Treasurer for over ten (10) years. She also continued to serve on other committees until her health began to decline. Earlier in her life, she was employed with Dulaney Canning Company, Manhattan Shirt Factory and Green Giant Company. She moved on to join the Somerset County public school system as the Food Services Manager, as well as with the Migrant Program in the summer. Her children have had many students compliment their Mom on more than one occasion on the great meals they were served while attending school and even a favorite meal. After retiring, she became a Foster Grandparent with the Shore-Up! Inc. Foster Grandparent Program. Hallie was preceded in death by her sister, Ernestine Holbrook Armwood, two brothers-in-law, Roger Armwood and William James, a son-in-law, Harry D. Laughlin, Sr. and a nephew, Roger Melvin Armwood. Hallie leaves to cherish precious memories: two daughters, Ellen Laughlin and Jennifer Wright and one son, Jeffrey Wright; five grandchildren, Harry Laughlin, Jr., Danielle Laughlin, Jamie Sterling, Mallory Wright and Jenna Wright; two sisters, Katie James and Emma Holbrook; one nephew, Shelby Ebanks; three nieces, Beverly Holbrook, Frances Roché and Ernestine Cappaninee and a host of other relatives and friends.
