Gwendolyn E. Thomas

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Gwendolyn McBride Thomas (98). She was granted her crown and jewels on December 27, 2019. She departed this life, under Hospice care, at the home of G. Odette Moorer and Wilbur L Moorer, her daughter and son-in-law, in Dover Delaware. Gwendolyn was born on January 12, 1921, to the late Rev. Alonzo W. and Lillie McBride in Wilmington, Delaware. The union of her parents brought forth 4 sons and 4 daughters. As her parents health began to decline, Gwen became the primary caregiver until their deaths. While caring for them, Gwen met and married Elridge H. Jones (deceased) and from this union, formed G. Odette Moorer. After the passing of her husband, she met and married George E. Thomas "Gingerbread" (deceased) and from this union a son, George A. W. Thomas Jr., was born. With a whole new life approaching her, Gwen and her husband became members of Union United Methodist Church in St. Michaels, Maryland. Here she became a dedicated worker in the church, lending her talents to play the organ and work as the church secretary, and in the community. Gwen found gainful employment as a school bus owner/driver and Moton High School secretary. While working these jobs, she attended school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Upon receiving her degree, she accepted a position at Eastern Shore State Hospital. After a full career, she retired from state service. However, not one to be idle, she became a homecare provider for several clients, and foster grandparent for head start. She also attended seminary school. In addition to a life of hard work, Gwen will be known for her steadfast devotion to her faith in God, and love of her family. In addition to her parents, Gwen was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary O. Knight, Augusta "Gussie" Alvina Collier and Violet Deshield; brothers, Thurston McBride, Alonzo McBride, Leslie McBride and Gerald McBride and grandson-in-law, John W. Pitts Jr. Gwen is survived by a daughter, G. Odette Moorer (Pastor Wilbur L. Moorer) Dover, DE; son, Deacon George Thomas (Jonell Thomas) Las Cruces, NM; special niece, Linda Collier Landover, MD; grandchildren, Trina L. Jones-Pitts Dover, DE; Carlos M. Jones Fruitland, MD; Brandy M. Moorer Dover, DE; Jovonna K. Thomas Las Cruces, NM; George A. M. Thomas III (Megan McFarland-Thomas) Lawrence, KS; great-grandchildren Spc. Malik A. Jones Ft. Steward, GA, Jourdyn J. Pitts, Jayla M. Pitts (Trina), Jireh Moorer, Gihon Moorer, Seven Moorer, Zin Moorer, Wisdom Moorer (Brandy) and Ayla J. Thomas (George III); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted children, extended family and friends.
