Gregory Hitchens

Gregory Allen Hitchens, affectionately known as “Perch” of Laurel, DE passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Christiana Care Hospital in Christiana, Delaware. Greg was 58 years old. He was born on March 20, 1955 in Seaford, Delaware to Robert and Bertha Hitchens. “Perch” received his early education in the Laurel School District. He graduated from the Laurel Senior High School in 1973. He received his Christian education from New Zion United Methodist Church in Laurel, DE, where he attended Sunday school. Greg had the pleasure of meeting life-time friends at his various places of employment. He has always been a dedicated worker. He worked for many years at the Townsend Poultry Plant in Millsboro, DE. He worked for Ames Department Store in Seaford, DE until they closed, and most recently, he worked for Parsons Farms in Dagsboro, DE. One of his favorite past times was fishing. Because of his love for fishing and catching enormous-size fish, he was featured on WBOC’s Scorchy Tawes’ Outdoors on Delmarva. He even made the local newspaper for catching the biggest fish. Besides fishing, Greg also loved sports. He was a die-hard “Pittsburg Steelers” fan. His favorite spot in the house was sitting in front of the television watching a game. He was also a collector of baseball cards. Perch loved pitch black, strong coffee. More importantly family and friends came first to Perch. If you needed something and he had it, he made sure you got it. The love and joy of his life were his son, Mark and his sisters. They meant the world to Perch. He also had a heart for all his cousins, especially the younger ones. He didn't need a reason to spoil them. He would often just out of the blue, bring presents to let them know, he was thinking of them. He was such a caring and giving person. Greg leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Robert and Bertha Hitchens of Laurel; his only son, Mark (Lavette) Williams of Middleford; four sisters, Jameszenna (Ralph) Roach of Seaford, DE; Cheryl Lynn Hitchens, Robin Renee Hitchens and Sharon C. Giles of Laurel, DE; one brother, Martin C. Hitchens of Eggharbor Township, NJ; one granddaughter, Kiondra Strand; great-grandsons, Derrick Kane, Jr. and Deshawn Kane; two step-grandchildren, Kaytra (John) McDonald and Lavar (Maria) Ross; two step great-grandson, Harold Dixon and Lavar Ross, Jr.; nephew, Clarence (Trina) Giles; nieces, Jalyssa and Amarani Hitchens; uncles, Donald Lee (Lorraine) Hitchens, Charles Wayne Hitchens and Eugene Puckham; aunts, Gwendolyn Twine and Claudette Hitchens, and a host of cousins and friends.
