Gertrude Bailey

Her Journey Evangelist Gertrude Bailey Gertrude Evans Bailey, a resident of Bishopville, MD, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, in her home at the age of seventy-seven (77), surrounded by her loved ones. Born in Bolivia, North Carolina, Gertrude Bailey, born Gertrude Marie Evans, was the daughter of the late Goldie May Evans and Arthur May Evans. Gertrude Bailey was the seventh born of fourteen (14) children. In 1961, Gertrude Bailey graduated from Brunswick County public schools and moved to Maryland. It was in Maryland that she met Johnnie Mack Bailey and from their union, two children were born, Darren and Diana. On May 24, 1968, Gertrude Bailey was saved and on the 25th, she received the Holy Ghost. She was baptized on September 29, 1968 and ordained as Evangelist on April 10, 1970. Gertrude Bailey attended St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Dr. M.T. Mitchell and the late Pastor Louise Williams, and held the titles of Evangelist, Church Secretary and Treasurer. Gertrude retired from the Stockley Center after thirty-one (31) years of employment. She operated Uncle Buck’s Grill for over eight years. During her retirement years, she enjoyed traveling back to North Carolina and spending time with her family and friends. Gertrude is survived by: her two children, Darren Bailey of Bishopville, MD and Diana Bailey of Salisbury, MD; her siblings, Rosa Lane McMillian of Wilmington, NC, Leroy Evans of Brooklyn, NY, Mary Lillie Smith Jordan (James) of Bolivia, NC, Carlton Hollis Evans (Linda) of Leland, NC, Hurley Evans (Carolyn) of Wilmington, NC, Thomas Ray Evans (Victoria) of Augusta, GA, Ellen Evans of Bolivia, NC, Arthur, Jr. (Karen) Evans of Bolivia, NC and Bobby Evans (Joni) of Southport, NC and three grandchildren, Dionderik Bailey of Salisbury, MD, Leikia Hallett of Bishopville, MD and Danielle Bailey of Salisbury, MD. Gertrude was the great-grandmother of four and had a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Mary Handy. In addition to her mother and father, Gertrude was preceded in death by her brothers, Archie Lee Evans, Hubert Evans and Kersell Evans and one sister, Annie Frances Evans.
