George Henry "Dap Daddy" Coverdale

George Henry Coverdale, son of the late Willis Spencer Coverdale and Margaret Ellen Matthews Coverdale, was born on July 13, 1937, in Concord, Delaware. Early afternoon July 14, 2017, he departed this life at Lewes Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes, Delaware. At an early age George attended Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church in Concord, DE and Bethel A.M.E. Church in Atlanta, DE. He graduated from Frederick Douglass Middle School in Seaford, DE and continued his education at William C. Jason Comprehensive High School before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1955. Following basic training at the USMC base at Parris Island, SC, he served in the Philippines, Europe and Japan. After returning to Concord, DE, he rejoined the community where he grew up and returned to the home in which he was born. Thereafter, he worked at Parsons Lumber Mill and the poultry firm, Townsends, Inc., from which he retired in 2002. Loved by all who knew him well, George was a beloved son, brother, nephew, cousin and uncle known as George Henry or Uncle George and trusted friend known as ‘Dap Daddy’ or ‘The King’. Always culturally aware and known for his keen mind, George loved to spend time with his family and friends discussing world and military history, politics, African-American studies, blues and current events. The Coverdale patriarch loved to visit his family in NY and travel out of state with his friend, Jay. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by two sisters, Rose Ellen Sobers and Thelma Lee Wright; one brother, Willis Edward Coverdale; and one nephew, Jarvis Augustine Coverdale. George leaves to cherish his memories, two sisters, Marian (William) Bowden and Linda Coverdale; two brothers, Willis James Coverdale and Enoch Coverdale; one sister-in-law, Judith McGeary Coverdale; three nieces, Sharon (Terrence) Bell, Tamika Coverdale, and Sharise Nieves; three nephews; Darrin Bowden, James (Clay) Wright, Jr., and Robert (Trudie) Coverdale; several special cousins including Lucretia Richards, Betty Wilson, Gwen Cannon Hammond, Vaughn Banks, Lettie Cannon, Joan Banks, Carolyn Banks, Jean Fletcher, Terrance Banks, Gary Gaines, Jamazine Matthews, Sherwood Matthews, Connie Rayford, Derrick Matthews, Virgil Matthews, Tyrone Matthews, Michelle Matthews, Mary Ellen Matthews; special friends, John ‘Jay’ Cannon, Robert Turner, Larry Deshields, Vergonda B. Thompson; and a host of cousins, great nieces, great nephews, relatives and friends.
