George Lynwood Burnette

Reflections of Life George Lynwood Burnette, a resident of Princess Anne, Maryland, was born on January 15, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland and was the youngest son of the late William Omar Burnette, Sr. and Henrietta Zella Bivens Burnette. He departed this life at the age of eighty-one (81) on Friday, March 3, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. “Baby George” as he was affectionately called by his family, was given that nickname because he was living with his grandfather, George Burnette, who had the same name. He was reared in a Christian home by his late “Poppa” George and his grandmother, Estina Burnette. At an early age, his Christian training was received at John Wesley Methodist Church in Deal Island, Maryland. He attended and graduated from the schools in Somerset County, Maryland. George was employed at Campbell Soup Company in Salisbury, Maryland as an Area Manager of Sanitation for the third shift and retired after thirty-seven (37) years of service, Dresser Wayne, Inc. as a Machine Operator for five years and University of Maryland Eastern Shore as a groundskeeper, retiring after fifteen (15) years of service. George was joined in holy matrimony to Joanne Bivens on August 12, 1962 and to this union three daughters were born. He was a loving husband and father. He loved fishing, all genres of music with his favorite song being “Jesus Is Love” by Lionel Richie. He was also an avid football fan of African American coaches and quarterbacks. He loved discussing and debating politics and would always win the discussion. “Baby George” leaves to cherish loving and tender memories with: his devoted wife of sixty (60) years, Joanne Bivens Burnette of Princess Anne, Maryland; three daughters, Mareesa Birckhead (John) of Delmar, Delaware, Carla Bailey (Carl) of Salisbury, Maryland and Candace Burnette of Ellicott City, Maryland; two grandchildren, Cylah Bailey of Salisbury, Maryland and Zachary Birckhead of Delmar, Delaware; a sister, Norma Jean Burnette of Spring, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Judy Burnette of Salisbury, Maryland and Gloria Jones (Richard) of Avenel, New Jersey and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents and grandparents, George was preceded in death by two brothers, William “Billy” Burnette and Harold Burnette, one sister, Frances Burnette Leonard, aunts Dorethea Ballard, Dorothy “Coffee” Jones, Eleanor Jones, Bertha Winder and Augusta White.
