Francis W. Spence

Francis Wilbur Spence affectionately known as “Smooth”,” Booboo”, “Frank”, and “Uncle Gus”, son of the late Cummings Purnell and Evelyn Spence, was born on June 12, 1956. He departed this life on Friday, December 5, 2014 in Wilmington, Delaware. Francis attended Calvary United Methodist Church as a young adult, where he was an usher and a member of "The Mighty Voices". He was also a member of the Trinity AUMP Church in Northeast, MD, where he attended bible study and sang in the choir. Francis loved the Lord. Francis received his early education at Cedar Chapel Grade School in Newark, Maryland, and also attended Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, Maryland. He was involved in football and basketball, but especially loved playing football. Francis was previously employed at Paul Revere Smorgasbord (Plim Plaza) as a cook, and also had various jobs in the Ocean City surrounding area. Francis enjoyed crabbing, fishing, cooking, making people laugh and living life. He was always “The Life of the Party”. Francis thought he was the best at playing Scrabble, Spades, Scattergories and Yahtzee. If there was a game to be played, he would teach you how to play while cheating you at the same time. Francis had a smile that could warm anyone’s heart. He loved his family unconditionally, and enjoyed family gatherings. Francis was preceded in death by his father Cummings Francis Purnell, mother Evelyn Iva Spence, brother George Spence, sister Ruth Reid, and brother Orphus Land. He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons Francis K. Spence (Desiree Spence) of Bear, DE, Keshawn A. Spence of Honolulu, HI; one daughter Faren C. Spence of Lagrange, GA; three granddaughters, Keona Spence, Ayana Spence, and Amadahie Spence; three grandsons Tahveon Spence, Joshua Spence, and Ahmod Spence; one brother Levin Spence of Berlin, MD; four sisters Margaret Leonard of Salisbury, MD, Joyce Smith of Lawton, OK, Beatrice Spence of Berlin, MD, and Javonna Smith (Wallace) Smith of Whaleyville, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.
