Evelyn Christy

The Life of a Queen On March 10, 1939, Evelyn Tilghman Christy, was born to the late Evelyn Tilghman in Princess Anne, MD. She was the oldest of four siblings and this was a title that she did not take lightly. She was affectionately known to a vast amount of people by many names such as Baby Evelyn, Auntie Ev, Miss Tilghman, Mama Christy, Aunt Evelyn, and Mama E to name a few. Evelyn has built a legacy that will allow her light never to dim nor be forgotten. Evelyn attended Somerset County Schools where she graduated from Washington High School in the year 1957. After graduating, she chose to pursue work with private families in Pennsylvania, before deciding to relocate back home to work in the Somerset County School System. This is truly where her desire for human services really kicked into overdrive. Evelyn then made the courageous choice to obtain a position with The Holly Center. There, she served a very special population for 27 years as a classroom instructor, while simultaneously working part-time for the University of Maryland Dining Services, which is currently known as Thompson Hospitality. She was employed there until she chose to enjoy her much deserved retirement in December of 2023. Evelyn touched so many lives during those 35+ years. This was a job that she truly loved and was perfect for, as she adopted many students into her family, over the years. Anyone who had the utmost pleasure to know Evelyn, knew that other than God and family, her true passion and calling was cooking and feeding people. Some of her greatest joys were Sunday dinners and holiday dinners with her family and all the countless others that were invited. She was a lifelong member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church. She found joy in attending the Somerset County MAC Center, where she met some special people. Evelyn was an avid traveler, and she loved to conquer new experiences as a cherished member of her AARP chapter. On August 30th, 2025, Evelyn completed her mission on earth and was peacefully called home in her sleep. She leaves 3 generations to cherish her memory, her only daughter, LaReine Kindle-Cropper (Sewell); her only granddaughter; Kayla Kindle (Sterling); and the only great-grandson, Durell Hyland Jr. Her legacy will live on through her one brother, John Thomas Tilghman; sister-in-law, Dr. Patricia Tilghman; nieces, Tamarra Tilghman, Trina Tilghman-Dix (Charles), Dr. Ayanna Tilghman, and nephews, Jason Tilghman (Kendra), and Leon Tilghman, Jr. (Jenna); and a host of great and great-great nieces, nephews, and dear friends whom she has loved throughout her 86 years of life. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Melvin Christy; her three brothers, Norman Tilghman, Leon Tilghman, Sr., Littleton King; and four sisters, Mary Fields, Bertha Worthy, Bessie Corbin and Barbara Leatherbury. Mrs. Evelyn Tilghman Christy was a beacon of light and a blessing to all who were fortunate to experience her presence! She will be loved, remembered, and cherished forever.
