Ernest Harvey Wickes

OBITUARY Ernest Harvey Wickes peacefully transitioned from this life on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at his home, with his loving wife by his side. Ernest was born on March 21, 1946, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Alberta Sterling and Ernest Isaiah Wickes. He was preceded in death by his son, Ronda Lavon Wickes, grandson, Marcus LaVon Wicks, stepfather, John W. Tilghman, Sr. and stepbrother, John W. Tilghman, Jr. Ernest received his education through the Kent County Public School System in Rock Hall and Chestertown, Maryland. Following his schooling, he spent much of his life working as a Waterman in Rock Hall, Maryland, a profession that reflected his deep connection to the Chesapeake Bay and the community he loved. He later became a member of the Delaware Laborers Local 199 Union, where he dedicated more than 30 years of service before retiring. Known throughout Maryland and Delaware, Ernest was affectionately called Harvey, Harv, Six Mill, and “The Six Million Dollar Man.” Those who knew him understood that the nickname fit perfectly. Ernest carried himself with a confidence and determination that made him believe he could accomplish just about anything—and more often than not, he did. He was unapologetically himself, and people were drawn to his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, infectious smile, and gift for storytelling. Ernest was one of the original and faithful members of Potter’s House Ministries, where he served as a Deacon and member of the Men’s Choir for many years. He was especially known for singing one of his favorite hymns, “Every Day with Jesus Is Sweeter Than the Day Before,” a song that reflected his love for God and his steadfast faith. Ernest was also a proud member of the Chestertown Chapter of the Thunderguards Motorcycle Club. Whether riding with fellow members, standing at the grill during family cookouts, sharing stories that left everyone laughing, or passing on his skills and wisdom to younger generations, Ernest had a way of bringing people together. His presence was felt wherever he went, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. Ernest leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of nearly sixty (60) years, Rosemary Wickes. The two were united in Holy Matrimony on July 2, 1966, and together built a life rooted in love, commitment, and family. He also leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life: two sons, Ernest L. Wicks (Angie) of Centreville, MD, and Tyaire Wickes of Wilmington, DE; two daughters, Letonia J. Wickes of Rock Hall, MD, and Lakeish Wickes of Smyrna, DE; bonus daughter, Rosemary Johnson Eaton of Chestertown, MD; bonus son, Walter Lewis of Smyrna, DE and Godson, Joseph Hartwell of Federalsburg, MD. He was a proud grandfather to Ernest L. Wicks, Jr., Erlesha Wicks, Eriel Wicks, Darius Harris, Jaden Wilson, Isaac Wicks, Khadijah Scott and Shawntay Scott and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Christine Harris of Chestertown, MD and Linda Taylor of New Jersey; his brother, Wayne Wickes of Atlanta, GA; stepbrother, Bishop Charles Tilghman, Sr. (Shirley) of Middletown, DE; stepsisters Rosalie Ringgold of Chestertown, MD, Dorothy Cooper of Rock Hall, MD, Thelma Tilghman of Pondtown, MD, Maude Jones of Coleman, MD, Lucille Tilghman of Chestertown, MD and Valentine Hackett of Big Woods, MD; sisters-in-law, Brenda Brown of Smyrna, DE, and Diane Hartwell of Wilmington, DE; brothers-in-law, Delbert Hicks (Carmen) of Rock Hall, MD, Elbert Hicks (Shirley) of Chestertown, MD and Willie Waits (Eleanor); a very special cousin, Thomas Andrew Hopkins; special friends, Grafton Thomas, Tyrone Brown, and Dave Strittmatter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends. Though we will miss his million-dollar smile, his laughter, and the stories only he could tell, we are grateful for the memories he leaves behind.
