Douglas W. Harris

Douglas Wendell Harris was born April 9, 1959 in Dover, Delaware to Elizabeth “Top” Harris Henry and the late Wendell Wright. Doug was educated at the Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Central Middle and a graduate of Dover High School in 1977. He entered the work force for the City of Dover, briefly before he later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for six years including service with the National Guard. During his time in the military he was stationed mostly in Germany. After serving our country honorably, he enrolled in truck driving training. Upon successfully completing this course, Doug enjoyed many road trip adventures which took him to many states including Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Doug was so proud to share his traveling experiences in his “Big Rig” with his family and friends. For fun and as a creative outlet, Doug liked music. Perhaps his ear for music may have stemmed from his brief period of clarinet lessons while attending William Henry Middle School. Doug honed his talent as a DJ, better known as “Dougie Fresh” at the digital turn table. He provided music at family gatherings and parties. Doug was also a football fan of the Dallas Cowboys and blue and gray were his favorite colors. Sundays was his time to seek out where they were playing. Can you believe this; Doug had a passion for his motorcycle. Doug sported his leather bikers’ vest and bandana like a “Rough Rider!”. Doug had another creative outlet, he would plant a small garden, which produced a great crop. His small garden consisted of eggplant, squash, tomatoes and none of which he planted he liked. He really enjoyed watching his crop to grow for others to eat. Doug lived a short time in New Jersey and later he and his daughter, Deztiny returned to Dover and lived with his mother due to being diagnosed with diabetes. Despite his illness, he continued to work with Delmarva Cleaning Company. Douglas Wendell Harris leaves to mourn his passing, his doted upon daughter, Deztiny; his mother, Elizabeth “Top”; and one brother, Wayne. Other siblings include Keith and Hope Gardner, and Michael and Wendell Wright, Jr. All of us will sorely miss Doug, a pleasant spirit, including his family, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
