Doris O. Scott This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV) Doris Oneida (Wicks) Scott was called to be with the Lord on March 6, 2026. She quietly and peacefully transitioned surrounded by family at the home of her beloved daughter, Sheila Scott-Rich, who lovingly comforted and cared for her. Doris was born to Norman Clarence Wicks and Goldie Elizabeth (Henry) Wicks on February 20, 1934, in Kent County, Maryland. She lived her 92 years in the close-knit community of Georgetown, which consisted of hard-working, connected, and loving families. Doris, affectionately known as “Sissy”, received her education at Henry Highland Garnett School. On February 21, 1952, she married the late Elwood Albert Scott of Georgetown, MD. Their union was blessed with eight daughters. Doris was employed at the Vita Food Cannery in Chestertown for many years. She later retired after 21 years of service as the Dietitian for the Kent County Sheriff's Department. Before her retirement, she was presented with the decorative Kent County Seal from Sheriff Bartus Vickers and the County Commissioner’s Office, in recognition of her outstanding culinary ability. While she had always harbored a desire to become a schoolteacher, she embraced what she believed to be God’s purpose for her life. In obedience to His will, Doris became a Lay Speaker in the Asbury United Methodist Church. In 2002, she became certified by the Easton District Lay Academy as an Advanced Lay Speaker. This accomplishment allowed her to lead the church in worship and deliver sermons to the congregation. She also served as a Prayer Warrior, a Bible School Teacher, and a member of the Grief Share Ministry. One of her favorite scriptures was Proverbs: 3:5-6. Her life was centered around her children who kept her very busy. Nevertheless, she consistently set aside time each weekday to view her preferred soap operas: Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow, and As the World Turns. Her fondness for these shows inspired her to name several of her children after the actresses. On summer Saturdays, she enjoyed taking her daughters to baseball games. These outings were a big event because the Georgetown Baseball team was constantly undefeated. Doris loved the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Using her best cooking skill she would display her finest dishes. But no matter how creative she would get her children would always dive into the fried chicken and baked macaroni first. These were her signature dishes, and to this day, none of her daughters has been able to replicate her recipe. She offered encouragement to not only her children, but to many nieces, nephews, and neighbors as they ventured beyond Georgetown into the wider world. She counseled with wisdom as they went through their challenges in life. Regardless of the situation, Doris consistently urged them to never give up and to put God first. Her quiet yet powerful strength, her resilience during difficult times, and her impressive patience served as a guiding light for her family. She helped them not only to merely cope with their problems, but to flourish during difficult times. These traits and her unconditional love made her a wonderful role model. Throughout her life, Doris had many good friends. In her later years she found companionship, laughter and peace in conversations with Julianne Thompson, Barbara Exum, Emily Acree, and Francis Harmon. She kept a close relationship with the late Dorothy Brown, as well as her very close lifetime friend and Sister-in-law, Mildred Brown, both of whom passed away several months before her call to glory. Doris was the matriarch of five generations. She impressed upon her children the necessity of raising her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as Christians. She would form a prayer circle whenever the family came together. Everybody, even the babies had to join this circle while she offered prayers to God to love and protect them. This practice stands as a profound legacy for the remaining generations. She is predeceased by her late husband, Elwood A. Scott; her siblings, Norman Wicks, Dorothy Hill, and Clarence Everett Wicks; her daughter, Elaine (Scott) Rice; her granddaughter, Jacqueline Pritchett; and great-great grandson Jeremiah White. Doris Onieda (Wicks) Scott is survived by her Brother-in-law, Johnson Scott (Debbie); her daughters, Rosalie Scott, Audrey Scott-Hynson (Lionel, Sr.), Dorothy Vanessa Scott, Rena Scott, Deborah Scott, Sheila Scott-Rich, and Pamela Scott-Skinner; son-in-law Nathaniel Rice (Bernice). Her memory will remain eternally in the hearts of her grandchildren, Jazmine, Tyrone, Scott, Anthony, Morgan, Andre, Joseph Jr., Ivory, Melaney, Angela (Harvey), Nita, Tamara, and George; 25 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Lastly, her memory will be cherished by Alvin Blake, who was regarded as a divinely appointed son. He always made sure she was safe and comfortable in her home during her final years in Georgetown.
