Demetrice Maxine "Meatcy" Sturgis (Jones)

“A bell is not a bell until you ring it. A song is not a song until you sing it. Love in our hearts is not here to stay. Love is not love until you have given it away." God in His infinite wisdom and divine love called Demetrice Maxine Jones Sturgis to her eternal rest on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford, Delaware. “Meatcy”, or “Mom Mom Meatcy” as she is often called, is the daughter of Mildred Handy Briddell, and the late Broomer Cropper. She received her formal education at Worcester High School, “Class of 69", in Newark, Maryland and furthered her education at Worwic Tech in Georgetown, Delaware. Demetrice, who was very business oriented, earned her business degree, which led to her owning two businesses – a Tax Service as well as a clothing business. Meatcy received her Christian training at Zion United Methodist Church, Selbyville, Delaware, then, as she grew in Christ, became a member of The Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Selbyville, Delaware. Meatcy was joined in holy matrimony to George Sturgis, Jr., on August 23, 1980 and to this union, six children were born: three sons, George Sturgis, Gerod Sturgis(Stephani), and Greg Sturgis and three daughters, Nicole Jones Ayers (Jermaine), LiSonya Sturgis and Rosalyn Sturgis. From those six, the family tree blossomed to included 23 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Additionally, there are grandchildren that she took under her wing, Christopher Jones, Demizha Hudson, and Javontay Sturgis, as well as two children she raised and loved from babes to age 8, Janaya and Jashawn Jackson. There are also a host of Godchildren, including Joanne Santiago, who gave her care. Meatcy also has five sisters, Brenda Bridell, Lillian Jones, Franchito Dismuke (Duane), Gloria Pitts, and Maria Wallop; five brothers, Agustine Santiago (Diane), Aparicio Santiago (Tirzah), Leon Bridell (Katrina), Concepcion Santiago, and Larry Johnson; and a host of many others who were her heart and she cherished dearly, who will keep Meatcy alive through their memories. Meatcy, you were faithful, loyal, kind, and true. This is the way I will always remember you. Your smiling face and helping hands has ceased to the Promised Land. What shall we do, what shall we say when someone we love passes away. Well, keep your eyes upon the throttle, your hands upon the rail. Keep your mind on Jesus and He will never fail. Sleep on our loved one. We love you, but God loved you best.
