Daisy C. Monroe

Daisy C. Monroe, a longtime resident of both Kent and Queen Anne's County transitioned from this life to the next on January 7, 2016 at the age of 93. She was born September 14, 1922 in Worton Point, Kent County, Maryland to the late Hattie Jane Starling and John Cross. Daisy was reared and educated in her early years in Kent County. She was married to Howard Leroy Monroe on October 25, 1951, and they became as one. In that union, Daisy and Howard reared seven children. Daisy was glad to share her love for her husband; she was a proud wife, mother, and grandmother. Daisy was a woman of many gifts and overflowed with love and enjoyment for her family, friends, church, and community. She was an avid gardener, supplying fruit, vegetables and preserves to many. Daisy was well known for her home cooked meals, rolls, pies, old fashion cookies and doughnuts. She was also a long time member of Bethel AME Church and former choir member. Daisy required her children to participate in worship when young and prior to illness, she often fellowshipped with them as adults at their place of worship. Daisy was one who had great motivation, love for learning and courage. Once she learned to drive and received her driver's license, there was not much that could get in her way. She visited her children and family frequently, both with her beloved husband Howard and alone--often after work. Daisy was a hard worker; over the years she served at Campbell Soup, Tomato and Spinach Factories, Vita Foods, and in domestic service. In addition to her parents, Daisy was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, two sons, Julian Martin, and James Monroe. Daisy was also preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Esther Martin (Nelson) and Josephine (Robert) Monroe and siblings: Mary, Bessie, Lillian, Anna, Nelson, John, Esther, and Oliver. Daisy leaves to celebrate her life and to mourn, two sons, Nelson Martin, [Chestertown, MD] and Robert Monroe [Pondtown, MD]; three daughters, Shirley Black, who also served as a faithful and devoted caregiver [Pondtown, MD]; Elizabeth Schofield (Donald) [Dover, DE], Dorothy Monroe [Pondtown, MD], two grandsons who also assisted with their grandmother's care, Marcellus “Louie” Black and Ezekiel Monroe. She also leaves nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren to celebrate her legacy along with and one sister and brother-in-law Grace and John Wilson [Colemans, MD], and two sisters-in-law, Katherine Gilliam [Seat Pleasant, MD] and Alberta Cross, [Philadelphia, PA] and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
